I think it is a hard market to break into when you were known traditionally as an acoustic guitar manufacturer. Think of it like this, despite all the great Fender electric guitars, the best Fender acoustics still don't get much recognition, and in the Fender Masterbuilt series, there are some extremely great and original guitars. C.F. Martin & Company at least used to make some electric guitars, and while those things aren't selling for cheap, they never really took off either. You just don't think of Martin and electric guitars, and I think it is for the same reasons you don't tend to think of Washburn and electric guitars.
Gibson has it made in this. Gibson somehow managed to be known equally well for acoustic and electric guitars. I'd think Fender, Martin, Washburn, and others ought to analyze why that happened so well for Gibson and see if they can come up with a plan.
