I am a twelve-year-old girl who is going through a tough time with family and friends. I'm losing a friend one by one, day by day. Sometimes, I feel like I should disappear off the face of the earth, and I fear that I may try to hurt myself. Do you have a solution to my problem?

Answer

Sweet girl, you're at an extremely challenging age right now, and I hope you are forgiving with yourself. Just breathe. Middle school is so very hard, with the gossip and friendship groups. Hormones are starting to take over your body. Friends -- especially girls -- at this time in your life are often possessive, dramatic, and bullies. They use relationships as weapons against one another. No wonder your emotions are taking a hit. You're not alone.

You need a wise, adult, stabilizing force in your life, someone you can talk to nonjudgmentally to help you get through these years. I bet your parents want to be that force but don't know how. Help them by trying to open up, even if it's awkward at first. (I understand because I have a daughter who is now 18 who was always very open with what was going on in her life. (We had a policy that whatever it was that was bothering her, it was better to share it with me and let me help than to have me find out another way or to have the problem grow bigger.)

I want you to promise me that you'll talk to your parents or at least another trusted adult (a relative, school counselor, someone who listens and cares about you). Tell them how you are feeling.

If you cannot do that for some reason and you reach a crisis point where you feel like hurting yourself, here are several crisis lines:

1) National Hopeline Network 1.800.SUICIDE (1.800.784.2433)

If you or someone you know are depressed and considering suicide, call the National Hopeline Network at 1.800.SUICIDE (1.800.784.2433). Your call is free and confidential. Or chat live with a crisis volunteer at http://hopeline.com/.

2) National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1.800.273.TALK (8255)

Call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) to talk with a skilled, trained counselor at a crisis center in your area. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

3) Crisis Text Line Number 741741

If you're in crisis and prefer to text rather than call, then here's a confidential crisis text line staffed nationally by trained counselors in suicide prevention. Text "HOME" to 741741 from anywhere in the United States.
