Sunshine Songs: Let the Sunshine Heal You

Whose mood doesn't improve with a little bit of sunshine? Whether you're gardening in the yard, exercising outdoors, or playing on the beach, let the warmth of the sun bathe you in light and positive energy, but remember to wear your sunscreen.

The sun is the best source of health-enhancing Vitamin D. That means soaking up the sun responsibly can include the following health benefits:

  • lowered blood pressure
  • improved bone health
  • better sleep quality
  • the easing of mild depression and
  • an enhanced immune system.

While you enjoy your outdoor time, why not listen to a playlist of pop, rock, country, and R&B songs about sun and sunshine? We have a long list to start you off!

1. "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield

Escape what's bringing you down with this zippy, upbeat 2008 dance number. It's a resilience anthem, with the narrator defiantly proclaiming that nothing will break her, nothing will shake her.

Her secret weapon against self-doubt is a pocket full of sunshine. She has a happy place that provides her loads of light and positivity.

2. "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and The Waves

The lady in this 1983 pop song is doing a major happy dance. She's got sunshine in her heart and her face must be beaming. She just received confirmation that her crush feels the same about her. Now she's bee-bopping around just waiting for him to send her a letter or come by for a visit.

3. "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" by Bill Withers

In this Grammy-winning R&B song from 1971, the narrator's partner sometimes just up and leaves their home. He has no idea how long she'll be gone or whether she'll ever return. When she pulls this naughty behavior the poor guy's whole world might as well stop.

For him, there's no sunshine and no warmth when she is away. When will this poor guy get a clue that she's spreading more than just sunshine to some other man's world?

4. "Seasons in the Sun" by Westlife

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun.

With death approaching, the man in this 1999 pop song accepts his fate and says farewell to loved ones. He says thanks to a childhood friend for the adventures they shared, to his father who tried to teach him right from wrong, and to his child who brought joy into his life.

5. "The Sound of Sunshine" by Michael Franti & Spearhead

Between economic pressures and everyday hassles, life can be stressful. However, according to this 2010 reggae-infused pop song, the sun can boost anyone's mood and provide a nice escape.

6. "Trip Around the Sun" by Kenny Chesney

A deep, philosophical song this is certainly NOT. This 2016 country ditty gives a wink and a nod to global warming and all the serious things going on in the world. Then it celebrates the fact that everybody in the bar has made it through another trip around the sun (that's a fancy way of saying they've lived another year):

We're all swimmin' in a fish bowl, just floatin' through the sky,
Pulled along by gravity and nobody knows why.

7. "Sunshine Song" by Jason Mraz

The narrator in this 2009 pop song is a smidge jealous that the sun seems to shine brighter on other people's lives, while he suffers gray clouds. (Hey, buddy, that's how it works sometimes!)

Tired of having rainy weather in his life, he urges those with an abundance of sunshine in their lives to throw a little his way. Maybe they can combine forces, he suggests, and make big things happen:

Oh, if this little light of mine
Combined with yours today,
How many watts could we luminate?
How many villages could we save?

8. "Brighter Than the Sun" by Colbie Callait

Just when you've given up on love, it hits you ... POW! Your heart will glow, your head will go dizzy, and you'll bliss out. This catchy pop song from 2011 reminds you not to blink because love can strike when you least expect. When it does, it'll shine brighter than the sun.

9. "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash

What I relish most about this reggae-influenced pop song from 1972 is its positive message. It conveys that just beyond life's most difficult stumbling blocks lie bright sunshine, opportunity, and hope. Remember that the next time life seems to be getting the best of you!

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way.
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun shiny day!

10. "Saturday Sun" by Vance Joy

The man in this 2018 indie rock song is heading back to the west coast to spend time with his new lover. As he drives in the Saturday sun, he laments how he's tired of being lonely and is ready for love. In the newness of this relationship, his new sweetheart seems to be just perfect for him. He doesn't know yet how she feels, but in the Saturday sun, he is intent to see whether the feeling is mutual.

11. "Sunshine" by Matisyahu

This uplifting pop song from 2012 has a reggae vibe and a positive message. The protagonist tells someone special that they are the golden sunshine through his haze. He encourages them to push aside all the mental obstacles standing in their way because they are a champion capable of great things, and they have each other. Everyone needs a support system like that!

12. "The Sun Will Rise" by Kelly Clarkson

In this pop song from 2011, the protagonist provides loving reassurance to a friend that the difficulties they are experiencing in their life right now won't break them. It only feels like that right now. There will come a day when the sun will rise, and everything will be alright again.

13. "Away from the Sun" by 3 Doors Down

The narrator in this rock song from 2002 finds himself living in a dark place, struggling against the world, and trying to make sense of his life. Who knows whether it's depression, addiction, or falling away from God that is his obstacle? The sun provides a beacon of hope and light for him and a way out of his dark abyss.

Some people claim that the song uses "sun" as a double entendre for "Son." They reference John 8:12, wherein Jesus says, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

14. "Sunrise" by Norah Jones

This smooth jazz-infused number from 2004 won a Grammy for good reason. Two lovers spend all morning cocooned in bed, and the day gradually transitions to an afternoon of the same. The sunshine is the only indication that an outside world exists beyond the one they've created together. When evening time arrives, they are still wrapped up in the covers of their own little world.

15. "Chasing the Sun" by The Wanted

This upbeat 2012 pop song pays homage to the magical, mystical quality of the sun. The narrator is only too happy to celebrate all night until the sun comes up. He advocates chasing your dreams. The tune was featured as a theme song for Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, an animated comedy adventure film.

16. "Sunrise" by Kygo (Featuring Jason Walker)

In a chill sorta way, this 2017 ditty is very danceable. It's about a guy who's been smoking pot all night and writing songs about a girl he loves. His girlfriend has told him some things and taken him somewhere he's never been. (We can only guess.) He plans to meet her at their secret place at sunrise.

"Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine." - Jack Ma, Chinese business magnate

"Never give up. Today is hard, tomorrow will be worse, but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine." - Jack Ma, Chinese business magnate

17. "Lovers on the Sun" by David Guetta (Featuring Sam Martin)

This international hit from 2014 describes a sexy-hot love between two people. Their passion burns so brightly that the narrator claims they might as well be lovers on the sun. (Now that's smokin' hot!)

18. "Soak Up the Sun" by Sheryl Crow

With a crummy job and a laidback attitude, the woman in this 2002 rock song can't afford much in the way of material things. That's okay. She's still rocking the good life. She looks up to the sun and soaks it up because it's free and decides to appreciate what she has in life:

It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got.

19. "She's Only Happy in the Sun" by Ben Harper

The subject of this poignant 2003 rock song is a woman who is on an emotional rollercoaster in her life. Perhaps she's chasing a dream, experiencing mental illness, or maybe she's on drugs. You decide.

Whatever the case, she experiences episodes of intense elation, feeling "in the clouds" with the sun. Then, she is predictably brought down to her knees in pain and laughter. The narrator is her lover, and he repeatedly remarks that she is only happy and free in the sun.

20. "Why Does the Sun Shine? (The Sun Is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)" by They Might Be Giants

Get ready to be educated about the star at the center of our solar system when you listen to this 1993 alternative rock song. The tune was first recorded in 1959 as a teaching aid for children. The group's updated version of it, complete with correction of factual errors, was used in a children's television game show, Carmen Sandiego: Out of This World.

Questions & Answers

Question: Who played the song, "Sunrize Sky" on piano?

Answer: There is a song called "Sunrise" (2010) that is piano-heavy pop/rock song by Irene Nelson. The YouTube link is: I'm hoping that's what you are referring to?

Question: Who sang "Light Up the Sun"?

Answer: The Irish singer Sean T. MacLeod (2013) sings it.

Question: Many years ago in church we sang a hymn that contained the lyrics, "a little bit of sunshine in the rain." I have searched for the music for this song for a very long time, but cannot find anything. Can you please help me with this?

Answer: I think this is the song you want. Sometimes people's memories of lyrics are not 100% exact. There was no exact match, and other songs that came close were not church-worthy. There is a hymn, however, called "Sunshine In The Mountain" that The Carter Family (a folk group) and others have sung:

When our hearts are bound in sorrow

And it seems all help is gone

Jesus whispers do not falter

I will leave you not alone

Then somehow amidst my trials

How it is I cannot see

Then I hear a voice from heaven

Gently saying follow me

There is sunshine in the shadows

There is sunshine in the rain

There is sunshine in our sorrows

And our hearts are filled with pain

There is sunshine when we're burdened

There is sunshine when we pray

There is sunshine heavenly sunshine

Blessed sunshine all the way

Sometimes my friends forsake me

And I'm tempted to despair

Then I think of my dear savior

To lay his head His head nowhere

Oh, it pays to follow Jesus

Just to learn of him each day

And I'll guarantee you, my brothers

You'll have sunshine all the way

There is sunshine in the shadows

There is sunshine in the rain

There is sunshine in our sorrows

And our hearts are filled with pain

There is sunshine when we're burdened

There is sunshine when we pray

There is sunshine heavenly sunshine

Blessed sunshine all the way.

Question: What songs have both sunshine and rain in the lyrics?

Answer: There are literally hundreds of songs that have both sunshine and rain in the lyrics. How about if I name you 10-15? Here they are:

1) “I Make My Own Sunshine” (2016) by Steven Tyler

2) “I Wish It Would Rain” (1967) by The Temptations

3) “Into Each Rain Some Life Must Fall” (1980) by Smokey Robinson

4) “What’s a Little Rain” (1974) by Tammy Wynette

5) “Georgia Rain” (1993) by Joshua Kadison

6) “Umbrella” (2007) by Rihanna

7) “(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden” (1970) by Lynn Anderson

8) “Shower the People” (1976) by James Taylor

9) “You’re My Best Friend” (1975) by Queen

10) “Pray” (2010) by Justin Bieber

11) “I’m a Believer” (2001) by Smash Mouth (cover of The Monkees’ song)

12) "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" (1981) by Juice Newton

13) "Get Along" (2018) by Kenny Chesney

14) "If I Didn't Have You" (2012) by Thompson Square

15) "I"m No Stranger to the Rain" (1989) by Keith Whitley

Question: What song contains the lyrics, "sunshine comes and sunshine goes"?

Answer: Although there wasn't an exact match, I did find one song that was very close: "Twenty-four Hours a Day" (1970) by The Partridge Family. Here is an excerpt of the lyrics that include what you're looking for:

And I know I loved you and you loved me, too

But the temptation for more than me, for movin' on was there

You were like the sunshine, but sunshine comes and goes

How was I to know that I would stay and you'd be the one to go?

Following is the YouTube link to the song: Hope this was helpful.

Question: What song is sung by a girl, contains a word similar to "sun," sounds happy and is between 2005 and 2015?

Answer: That's quite a request. However, Carly Rae Jepson released "Sunshine On My Shoulders" in 2008

Question: What song has the lyrics, "eclipse of the sun" in the lyrics?

Answer: In a lyrics search, I found upwards of 70 songs with these lyrics. The most famous is probably Carly Simon's 1972 hit, "You're So Vain." I'll provide some excerpted lyrics with that portion:

Clouds in my coffee, and...

Well, I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won

Then you flew your lear jet up to Nova Scotia

To see the total eclipse of the sun … .

Question: I'm looking for a country song with the words "tomorrow by sunrise" in the lyrics. Can you help?

Answer: There is a song by country singer Conway Twitty from 1972 called, "One More Sunrise" that includes the very similar lyrics "tomorrow at sunrise."

Question: What is a song from before 1976 that includes sun, rainbow, and clouds in the lyrics?

Answer: There is a song by Arthur Hamilton that both Andy Williams and Peggy Lee each recorded. It was called, "I Can Sing a Rainbow." Although it included many colors and was used to teach kids colors, it included colors such as pink that were not actually in the rainbow and omitted other colors that the rainbow actually does feature.

Looking for a song about Sunshine that has a Latin kind of vibe to it. I heard it during a dancing class of mine and now I am dying to figure it out. I only recall lyrics such as sun, brush off the sun? Something like that... very upbeat though. Help?

FlourishAnyway (author) from USA on September 18, 2018:

Paul, I don't recognize the song using the information provided, and doing several searches I found some matches that were close but not 100%. One was Robin Beck's "Footprints in the Rain" (1984). Also, there is a song by Jamie O'Neal called "Like a Woman" (2008). There's just not enough information to go on. Sorry.
