The Friend Zone: A Close, yet Unattainable Potential Love Match

A guy asks his female friend to go to the movies. He doesn't specify that he's asking for a date, so his prospective love interest invites two mutual friends to go as well. The aspiring Romeo spends the movie sitting two seats over from her. The poor guy got friend zoned and didn't even see it coming.

The friend zone refers to one person in a friendship being interested in becoming more than "just friends." The person is either afraid to reveal their attraction or they do reveal their romantic feelings and are rebuffed. As a result, they ache longingly for their pal, a close, yet unattainable potential love match.

You've probably been to the friend zone or banished someone else there. Inhabitants of the friend zone report that it is a vast, cold wasteland filled with what-ifs and if-onlys. Word is that it's hard to escape from there.

If the friend zone is all too familiar to you, then make a playlist. Alternatively, select a favorite song from our long list of pop, rock, country, and R&B songs to either

  • help convince your crush to see you as more than "just friends" or
  • reject a friend who is looking for more from you.

Good luck in finding love outside of the friend zone.

1. "Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon

As a child of the 80s, I can vouch that we friend zoned each other back then, too, although we didn't have any clever names for the phenomenon. This 1984 rock song describes the internal struggle of whether to spill your guts about your attraction or just keep pining away and not risk the friendship.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I can't fight this feeling any longer
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow
What started out as friendship has grown stronger
I only wish I had the strength to let it show.

2. "FRIENDS" by Marshmello & Anne-Marie

Do you need to put that persistent someone squarely in the friend zone where they belong? If so, then use this friend zone anthem because it leaves absolutely zero room for confusion.

The narrator in this 2018 electronic pop number has a friend she's known since they were kids, and she looks upon him as a brother. However, he must have gotten hit in the head with a rock or something because now he's casting goo-goo eyes her way, wanting to get his happy on. Even worse, he's utterly unrelenting.

She doesn't want her old friend to mess up their relationship by talking about sexual attraction. That will only push her away further. She's made her feelings so clear that she literally spells it out for him. Why can't he understand that "no" means "no"?

Friend Zone Lyrics:

Haven't I made it obvious?
Haven't I made it clear?
Want me to spell it out for you?
F-R-I-E-N-D-S.

3. "You Belong with Me" by Taylor Swift

The girl-next-door in this 2009 country crossover song has fallen hard for a male friend. However, he's dating a popular cheerleader who doesn't value him. The snobby girlfriend doesn't like his type of music, doesn't get his humor, and doesn't know his story like his friend does.

The narrator watches their relationship and yearns for him. She waits for the guy to recognize that his girlfriend isn't right for him at all, whereas true love has been waiting for him all along.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

Can't you see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see?
You belong with me.

4. "Whenever I Call You Friend" by Stevie Nicks and Kenny Loggins

On occasion, a person is able to move their relationship out of the friend zone and rev up a romance with their friend. Don't kid yourself though. You and your friend-turned-lover won't ever forget the platonic place where you started. The lovers in this 1978 soft rock duet look at each other and see the friend they've always had in each other. Isn't that a good thing though?

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I see myself within your eyes
And that's all I need to show me why
Everything I do, always takes me home to you ever and ever.

5. "Baby" by Justin Bieber (featuring Ludacris)

Back in 2010, a fresh-faced Justin Bieber laments that his first love has broken his heart by kicking him to the friend zone. He'd do anything for her and can't believe they've broken up. The Biebster offers to buy her anything to make her happy. The video of this song is both one of the most viewed and most disliked videos on YouTube.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

Are we an item? Girl, quit playin'
We're just friends, what are you sayin'?

6. "Everything You Want" by Vertical Horizon

Psychologically, some people are walking wounded, hurt and haunted by the past, confused about what they want, and unwilling (or not ready yet) to seek help. This alternative rock song from 2000 features a friend of one such person.

He adores her, but like other potential romantic partners of hers, he has been relegated to the friend zone. Of course, this leaves him confused. (Hey, sometimes, it's not about YOU, okay?)

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I am everything you want
I am everything you need
I am everything inside of you
That you wish you could be
I say all the right things
At exactly the right time
But I mean nothing to you, and I don't know why.

7. "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos

This 1971 classic rock song was named to Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time." The man in this tune has it really bad for a woman he's given comfort and a sympathetic ear to when another man has broken her heart. For him, it's misery sitting in the friend zone. She has him feeling foolish and begging on his knees that a future for them is possible.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down.
Like a fool, I fell in love with you,
Turned my whole world upside down.

8. "Not in That Way" by Sam Smith

Sam Smith's pained voice captures the anguish one feels when they fall deeply in love with a friend and feel certain it's a one-way love affair. In the somber 2014 ballad, the narrator describes his reluctance to keep his feelings to himself for fear of rejection. But here's the thing: you never know if you don't ask. What's more painful than rejection is never knowing for sure.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I'd never ask you cause deep down
I'm certain I know what you'd say
You'd say I'm sorry, believe me
I love you, but not in that way.

9. "Friend Zone" by Danielle Bradbery

After winning the 2013 season of NBC show The Voice, this young country singer went on to release this 2015 song. Critics seemed to think the tune was not quite ready for music prime time, however. The song claims that the secret to success with a girl is spending money on her. Failure to do that will land a guy in the friend zone. Most girls aren't that shallow, however. As a general rule, most human beings want respect and to feel valued. That doesn't have to be expensive.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

You think you're doing just fine
Ooh, she got you on the sideline
You think you're flying towards the end zone
You're just headed towards the friend zone.

10. "Don't Let Go" by En Vogue

Friend Zone Lyrics:

What's it gonna be 'cause I can't pretend?
Don't you wanna be more than friends?

The woman in this 1996 R&B ditty is stuck in the friend zone, and she's begging to get outta there. She's consumed with thoughts of holding her BFF tight, lovemaking, and even wearing his clothes. Aching for an end to her misery, she tries to convince her friend to set her free and make her a lover.

11. "To Be with You" by Mr. Big

The guy in this 1991 hard rock song lays it all out on the line when the girl he secretly loves is left heartbroken by her boyfriend. He's tired of watching and waiting on the sidelines, listening patiently to her as she complains about what the boyfriend has done lately to disappoint her. He knows he can show her love and make her smile in a way that the boyfriend can't. She just needs to give him a chance.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I'm the one who wants to be with you (I'm the one)
Deep inside I hope you feel it too (feel it too)
Waited on a line of greens and blues (waited on a line)
Yeah, just to be the next to be with you.

12. "Teardrops on My Guitar" by Taylor Swift

Have you ever had that awkward, secret crush on a friend but they keep going on and on about someone else they like? Your friend gushes about them, asks you dating advice, and even confides that they are in love with this other person.

That's the scenario the narrator in this 2007 country crossover song finds herself in. Being hopelessly friend zoned makes her cry when her crush isn't around, but it does give her plenty to write and sing about. As with most of Taylor Swift's songs, it's based on a real person, a guy that she used to go to school with but never dated.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won't see
That I want and I'm needing everything that we should be
I'll bet she's beautiful, that girl he talks about
And she's got everything that I have to live without.

13. "More Than Friends" by Jason Mraz (featuring Meghan Trainor)

If you're looking for the perfect song to tell your longtime friend that you want something more, then this mellow 2018 pop ditty is it. It describes how fulfilling the friendship is and how the narrator wants to take the crush that she has on her friend and turn it into a genuine romantic relationship, provided that he feels the same way.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I wanna be more than friends
I wanna be more than friends
I wanna tell everyone you're taken
And take your hand until the end
I wanna be more than friends.

14. "Just Friends" by Hayden James (featuring Boy Matthews)

Friends with benefits (FWB) relationships are intended to involve sexual intimacy without the messiness of emotional commitment or romance. But here's the thing: repeatedly bumping uglies with your good buddy can come with unexpected complications.

This catchy, danceable pop tune from 2018 is an FWB anthem. Released by an Australian artist, it didn't chart in the US but has done well on YouTube. The tune's narrator has realized a little too late that he's fallen in love with his friend and doesn't know where to go with these new feelings. So complicated!

Friend Zone Lyrics:

When you say my name
So casual touch, my hand
I stop and play it cool
Like I'm not into you
But I'm just lying.

15. "Something to Talk About" by Bonnie Raitt

Sometimes you're in love with your friend and everyone around you realizes it except for you. Perhaps it takes a little gossip to make you wake up to the truth.

In this bluesy rock number from 1991, a woman discloses to her friend that she's been hearing rumors that they are an item. People think that they stand too close, laugh too loud, and stare too long to be platonic. Recognizing that the rumors are right, the woman suggests spicing up their relationship:

Friend Zone Lyrics:

People are talkin', talkin' 'bout people,
I hear them whisper, you won't believe it.
They think we're lovers kept under cover,
I just ignore it but they keep sayin' we... .

16. "Just Friends" by Ally Barron

Are you hopelessly in love with a friend who is dating someone else? If so, then this is the perfect song. You sit on the sidelines, offering them emotional support for their relationship troubles while also secretly wishing that it fizzles.

This 2017 pop ballad describes the anguish of waiting for someone you love to recognize that you can be so much more than their good buddy. Don't they feel the spark and dream about you, too?

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I watch you watchin’ me
While your sittin’ next to her
But I’m still gonna be the friend you need even if it hurts.

17. "It Hurts" by Angels & Airwaves

The guy in this 2006 rock song has crossed a line with his female best friend, and there's no going back. He knows she's deceptive and full of both excuses and alcohol. He also senses their relationship won't end well. Still, they are irresistibly drawn to one another.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

Her lips were the last thing touched tonight
Your best friend is not your girlfriend.

18. "Like a Friend" by Blue

You meet somebody who's just perfect for you, and you instantly connect. But there's just one problem: they're happily committed to somebody else. What do you do? In this 2002 pop song by British boy band, Blue, the narrator faces this frustrating dilemma. He decides to wait it out in the friend zone until he begins to fully grasp just how lonely it is there.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

But I know I can't have you and I can't live without you,
But I guess I can't have it my way.
For the lovin' I'm feeling, my heart is still breathing,
Girl, how can you treat me this way?

19. "Teenage Dirtbag" by Weatus

Occasionally the underdog actually wins the girl. That's the atomic plot twist in this international pop hit from 2000.

An Iron Maiden-loving social outcast has a crush on a classmate in his high school gym class, a popular girl with a big shot boyfriend. The outcast believes that neither one of them know who he is, and he's content to tell himself that his crush doesn't know what she's missing. At the prom, however, the girl approaches the teenage dirtbag and invites him to an Iron Maiden concert. Love blooms because of a common interest in music, baby.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

Oh, how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirt bag, baby ... .

20. "Just Friends" by Jonas Brothers

The high school guy in this 2007 pop tune is getting way out over his skis. He's been friend zoned, but he has yet to get the message. As he walks through the halls with his female friend and waits for her one-word text responses, the friend zoned dude daydreams about their eventual marriage. Something tells me he has disappointing news in his future.

Friend Zone Lyrics:

I've been making lots of plans
Like a picket fence and a rose garden
I just keep on dreaming
But it's cool 'cause we're just friends.

If you find yourself in the friend zone, it's best not to live there too long. It's a lonely place that is hard to climb out of.

Suhail - I like both of those songs. Most of us have been friend zoned or banished someone to the friend zone at one time or another. I hear about it now from my young readers, teenage and twentysomething relatives and their peers. Have a great week and Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate it.

Excellent, Flourish. Wonderful list. The friend zone sounds a lot like the Twilight Zone, and I don't want to visit there either. But I've probably been there, and probably sent a few to the "friend zone" in my life.

I didn't know it was called the friend zone either. But I guess that term describes it. I have, however, heard of friends with benefits. ;) I also didn't know there were so many tunes about this complicated relationship. If I think of some from the dusty archives, I'll add to the list. But this one has me stumped.

        Happy Thursday!

Dora, I get lots of questions from young people about dating and their love interests. They are often very concerned about how to go from just friends to more than that, so I thought I thought this was an especially appropriate playlist for them and others facing the dilemma.

Linda - Some of my readership leans young and I'm trying to appeal to some of the topics they enjoy while also keeping their elders current on the trends! You might surprise someone very youthful in your life that you know the term by slipping it into conversation. Their eyes will probably bug out but it'll show you know what's going on in the world! I often joke with my husband that if he's not good, he's going right into the friend zone. He just shakes his head.

James - In the end, we all end up old, wrinkled and hunched over, a mere caricature of what we were in our glory days, so the friendship we share with our partners better be awful good -- lots of shared memories, tolerance, inside jokes, and appreciation for the mundane details of life. As exciting as the spicy stuff may be, that can't last forever, but the friendship sure can.

I thought of two people when I first saw what your musical compilation list was about. Milhouse and Lisa from the Simpsons came to mind. The friend zone concept seems to go against relationship advice. Often, I've heard that the key to successful marriages are that the partners are first and foremost best friends. So, it would seem the best partner would be one who is proven as a friend.

Poppy - Sometimes the friend zone is a person's inability to take "no" for an answer. When that happens, the friend zoned person has no one to blame but themselves. Usually they don't see it that way, however. Glad you're enjoying married life.

Bill - Some of these were a little difficult to generate, but I had fun with this one. It was for my younger readers who write me a LOT of Q&As about dating relationships. Thanks for sticking with me. Have a great day, buddy!

Oh, dear Clive, As lovely as you are, my husband has asked me to honor my previous commitment to him. He's super chill but kinda takes those vow things to heart. So sorry, but can we still be friends?

Great list! I often hear or see on the internet (mostly men, but the odd woman too) complaining that they have been put in the "friend zone." As a married woman, I'm glad I don't have to deal with that sort of drama anymore, as it can sometimes lead to bitter feelings from one or both parties.
