Gratitude Is a Tool for Happy Relationships

How long has it been since you have expressed heartfelt appreciation to someone in your life—a friend, mentor, relative, or lover? Perhaps they lent you an ear and offered advice. Or helped you out in material, pragmatic ways. Or wiped your tears and provided a warm hug and some encouragement when you especially needed it.

If there's someone you want to thank, then why not create a custom playlist for them? Songs can help you express your appreciation. We have a large list of pop, rock, country, and R&B favorites to get you started.

1. "In My Life" by The Beatles

In this classic 1965 Beatles song, the narrator pays the highest tribute of gratitude to the loved one he addresses. He explains

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you.

The remarkably talented Ed Sheeran played the song at The Beatles' 50th Anniversary Show in 2014 and gained the solid approval of Sir Paul McCartney.

2. "Every Day" by Rascal Flatts

This 2008 song is a thank you to someone close who is the narrator's rock of emotional support. They are the guardian of his secrets, the only one who truly understands him, and the one who saves his life by lifting him from the deep, dark and desperate place that he sometimes decends into.

3. "Kind & Generous" by Natalie Merchant

This 1998 song is a humble, loving tribute to a friend who has opened their heart charitably to her. It shines with genuine appreciation and affection:

You've been so kind and generous
I don't know how you keep on giving
For your kindness I'm in debt to you
For your selflessness, my admiration
And for everything you've done,

4. "Thank You" by Dido

In this 1999 song, even when it feels like the world is working completely against the narrator, she can count on one person to center her and provide comfort. Against the backdrop of bills, body aches, bad weather, and other life hassles, she remains thankful for having a soft place to land.

5. "In This Life I Was Loved By You" by Collin Raye

This 1992 country ballad shows deep gratitude for a soulmate. Amidst all of the blessings that the narrator can point to in his life, he points to his partner's love as a dream come true.

"Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for." - Epicurus, Greek philosopher

"Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for." - Epicurus, Greek philosopher

6. "Thank You" by Keith Urban

The important helper in the narrator's life found him when his days were bleak and empty. She was a friend and provided guidance and support when he was surrounded by strangers. Then, she became his wife. In the 2009 song, he declares her intervention in his life a personal miracle. One must wonder whether this is about his wife, Australian actress Nicole Kidman.

A Dozen Low Cost Ways to Say "Thank You"

write a poem (it doesn't have to rhyme) or compose a handwritten letter

send a digital greeting card or paper card with a heartfelt note

make their favorite casserole or a pot of their favorite homemade soup

make a small crafted item (e.g., ornament)

look them in the eye and tell them from your heart what they mean to you

bake them cookies or cupcakes

present them with a pack of lifesavers and describe the ways they're been a lifesaver to you

develop a top 10 list of why you appreciate them

prepare a video expressing your gratitude and include photos of both of you

make a customized playlist for them

send them a small gift card, treat bag, or a bouquet of balloons

deliver a small potted plant, kitchen herbs, or inexpensive flowers, along with a thank you hug

7. "Because You Loved Me" by Céline Dion

This inspiring 1996 song was a Grammy award winner and a worldwide hit. In a display of unflinching gratitude, the narrator puts her lover on a pedestal, thanking him for all the strength and inspiration that he has provided. She declares, "I'm everything I am because you loved me."

Céline Dion met her late husband when she was 12 and he was a successful record producer. He mortgaged his home to finance the girl's blossoming career. They started to date when the singer was 19 and Angélil, twice divorced with three children, was 45. Am I the only one who finds their relationship a little creepy?

"There is no greater treasure in this world than somebody who loves you as you are." - Eric Micha'el Leventhal, American author

8. "God Gave Me You" by Blake Shelton

In this 2011 country song, the narrator admits to having been a "walking heartache" who "made a mess of me." However, he is ever-thankful for the lovely angel in his life who helps him with his ups and downs. In 2015, following a four-year marriage, Blake Shelton divorced fellow country star Miranda Lambert, about whom he sang this song.

9. "Your Song" by Elton John

What bigger expression of gratitude could there be than telling someone, "How wonderful life is while you're in the world"? The narrator in Sir Elton John's 1970 signature song doesn't have the money that Elton does, so his gift is his song.

10. "Thank God For You" by Sawyer Brown

It's important not to forget where you came from. The protagonist in this fun country hit from 1993 thanks the many people in his life for making him the man he is today:

I got to thank mama for the cookin'
Daddy for the whuppin'
The Devil for the trouble that I get into
I got to give credit when credit is due
I thank the bank for the money
Thank God for you.

11. "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Andrew Gold

If it's your BFF you want to thank, then this classic is a perfect way to do it. The song may be from 1978, but it'll never go out of style.

The narrator recounts that the two have been friends for a long time and hopes they will always stay that way. He is appreciative of his pal for keeping his confidences and for reliably being there.

12. "I Thank You" by ZZ Top

The narrator in this 1979 song thanks his partner for loving him and for opening his eyes to a brand new world of adventure. Even though his sweetheart has taken her love elsewhere, he is grateful for what she taught him, if you know what I mean.

13. "This" by Darrius Rucker

Looking back at all of the heartaches, mistakes, and lost opportunities he has endured, the narrator in this 2010 song sees that it has nevertheless all been worth it. He is thankful for his life now and sees every step as necessary to getting him to where he is today.

"Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom." - Marcel Proust, French novelist

14. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin

In this 1967 song, the "Queen of Soul" describes a woman who felt uninspired and without purpose in life until she met the person she's singing about. Then, her life did a 180-degree turn, and she stepped up to being the woman she was always meant to be:

Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But you're the key to my peace of mind.

Actress Candice Bergen famously sung the song in a 1992 television episode of "Murphy Brown." Bergen's character, an unmarried woman, gave birth and became a single mother on the show. It prompted Vice Presidential candidate Dan Quayle to criticize the character's decision to have a baby out of wedlock as an example of the crumbling of traditional values in America.

15. "Thank You For Loving Me" by Bon Jovi

The narrator in this 2000 song wants to ensure that his beloved knows how deeply appreciated she is. When he was at his lowest points, she lifted him up. She believes in him and his dreams. He expresses his unending gratitude: "Thank you for loving me."

16. "I Could Not Ask For More" by Sara Evans

Like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow — that's how the protagonist in this 1999 song views the person she is thankful for. She feels thankful to be alive, just to be beside her partner. She his presence in her life as proof that heaven must exist. Syrupy? Maybe. But the girl is blissing out on the drug called love.

17. "Thank You" by Hellyeah

Perhaps you wouldn't expect this 2008 song of gratitude from a heavy metal supergroup like Hellyeah, but give it a try. It's about expressing appreciation to someone close who has already passed and feeling regretful that you didn't say "thanks" when you had the chance.

Believing late is better than never, the narrator in the song expresses his gratefulness and then extends it to several people in his life who are still here. Take the song as a positive lesson to go ahead and say what you need to say now before it's too late.

18. "Thank You" by Johnny Reid

This compelling 2007 song is an appreciation song for someone close who is dying. As the narrator wishes they had one more day together, he thanks his loved one for all that they have given him. He is grateful that they have shared their love and dreams, helped him through life's storms, and shared in his joys.

"Greet every morning with open arms and say thanks every night with a full heart. Each day is a precious gift to be savored and used, not left unopened and hoarded for a future that may never come." - Regina Brett, American author

19. "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" by James Taylor

In this classic 1975 hit, the protagonist is overjoyed that his sweetheart has come into his life. Her love provides shelter, and he is thankful for her "sweet love and devotion." He compares their attraction to honey and a bee.

20. "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler

A signature song for "The Divine Miss M," this thank you ballad was the theme song for the 1989 movie "Beaches" which told the story of a friendship spanning 30 years. The song expresses appreciation for the friend who offered quiet support and allowed another to shine in the spotlight:

Did you ever know that you're my hero?
You're everything I wish I could be.
I could fly higher than an eagle,
'Cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Peggy - It doesn't take much time to express gratitude, but it goes a long way.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on May 08, 2020:

Those two little words, "Thank You," can mean so much to people if said in a heartfelt manner. We should always be grateful for our many blessings. There were so many good songs here. "Wind Beneath My Wings" is a favorite of mine.

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on November 20, 2019:

Hi I enjoy every moment here as I am such a huge music fan. These songs this week are spot on. We can never show appreciation to someone often enough. Sending you many Angels and good wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving. ps

I was searching for a "Thank You" song from long ago. I am 66 years old and the song was back then old. I did hear it from an African Children's Choir a while back together with another very old song "Amen"

CrisSp from Sky Is The Limit Adventure on October 03, 2017:

Awesome playlist! Kudos for the effort in putting them all together. *round of applause*

These days, I'm hooked to Charlie Wilson's "I'm Blessed". Have you heard of it?

Suhail and my dog - I appreciate the kudos. I used to be fairly narrowly focused in my musical preferences but once I broke out of that, I realized I appreciated all types of music, from zydeco to bluegrass to metal to oldies to rock and opera. Truly everything!

Suhail Zubaid aka Clark Kent from Mississauga, ON on September 18, 2016:

Hi Flourish Anyway,

That is a great list again. I wonder how do you manage all those lists.

I have only listened to the ones from ZZ Top and Bon Jovi only because I listen to such a narrow genre of music.

I got to listen to some others from this list now :-)

Thanks for sharing a great list once again.

Hi Flourish,

I'm grateful you've put so much hard work into this wonderful hub of all of the "gratitude" or "thank you" songs out there. What a great list, as always.

You've brought back so memories once again with ZZ Top and James Taylor and so many more here.

I am mindful to count my many blessings each day, even my soft pillow to lie my head on at the end of the day. I am so grateful for being healed my the Lord God of DCIS breast cancer and able to enjoy my four beautiful grandchildren.

Blessings and peace

Linda Lum from Washington State, USA on August 11, 2016:

First of all, thank you for being you and for sharing these wonderful lists with us. Each one is special.

I have one more song to add to the list--after seeing Paul McCartney in concert earlier this year, I heard him talk about the song "Here Today", and then he sang it for us. It was his tribute to John Lennon, after Lennon was taken out by an assassin's bullet.

It's a love song, and I think it is also a "thank you" for the friendship they shared, the music they created together, and (ultimately) the life that Paul has because of this special friend.

"IT" would not have happened if Paul and John had not known each other.

Yves on August 11, 2016:

There's too many good one's, Flourish. You out did yourself, girlfriend! Let's see. How to pick?

Rascal Flatts, (They're just so cool)

ZZ Top (Of course!!)

Andrew Gold (Because I love the Golden Girls)

Dido (Always loved her style)

Okay, I'll go with those for now. And yes, the 19 year old Celine and 45 year old Renee thing pretty much creeped me out as well. (May he rest in peace).

Thanks for a great list. Time to listen to ZZ Top again. Ha! They never get old. Love those guys.

Surabhi Kaura on August 11, 2016:

Cool! A wonderful list here. Thanks for the share :)

mactavers on August 11, 2016:

Really great Hub. Being thankful is the key to happiness and telling those around you that you are thankful to have them in your life is the key to great relationships.

James C Moore from The Great Midwest on August 10, 2016:
