Fifty Shades of Grey Soundtrack: The Music Behind Fifty Shades

Updated on July 12, 2017

What is Fifty Shades of Grey?

Released back in 2011, Fifty Shades of Grey is the first in a series in a trilogy of erotic romance novels by E.L. James. It depicts the relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and successful CEO and business man, Christian Grey. The theme of the book is BDSM where consenting partners each take on different role. One is dominant and the other is submissive.

In spite of such role play, Fifty Shades of Grey is a story about Christian and Ana's budding relationship. Therefore the music reflects love, wanting, and of course intimacy. The soundtrack consists of various artists such as The Rolling Stones, Sia, The Weeknd, Ellie Goulding, and much more. And genres such as R&B, Jazz, Pop, and Rock.

"I put a spell on you
Because you're mine

You know I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you anyhow
And I don't care if you don't want me
I'm yours right now."

"I Put A Spell On You" appears in the opening credits of the film. The lyrics are so telling. Originally a 1956 Jay Hawkin's song, Anna Lennox performs a masterful cover. Clearly, it's a song about possession. The person actually casting the spell can be interpreted as Christian or Ana. When they first meet, for them both its a magnetic attraction. From the beginning, the two just gravitated towards each other. Even if she knows that's he's not the man she needs, he's the man she wants and she is powerless to stop it.

"You’re undiscovered
I wanna see the rest of you
I can’t get next to you
I can’t get next to you

You’re undiscovered
I wanna see the rest of you
I can’t get next to you
I can’t get next to you."

Laura Welsh's "Undiscovered" plays after Anastasia comes home from the interview with Christian. To say she's smitten, would be an understatement. While in scene, the song plays from her roommate's laptop (which honestly as well be playing from her heart). When Laura sings, "You're undiscovered, I wanna see the rest of you. I can't get next to you", it represents Anastasia's curiosity. The song in general radiates optimism and hope which after all love has a way of conjuring.

"You make it look like it's magic
'Cause I see nobody, nobody but you, you, you
I'm never confused
Hey, hey

So I'ma care for you, you, you
I'ma care for you, you, you, you, yeah
'Cause girl you're perfect
You're always worth it."

"Earned It" by The Weeknd plays on the ride home from Christian's place. As the lyrics dictate, Christian and Ana both despite their night of passion have hesitations. Christian (inside) doesn't know if he can do the "vanilla" relationship for too long. And Ana's insecurities of dating someone who she'd consider to be out of her league. Either way, the slow and sensual nature of the song suits the physical nature of their relationship.

"Meet me in the middle,
Tell me something
That could change my mind
I couldn't let it be known,
This it is every time I refuse to say goodbye."

The sultry, blues-inspired track "Meet Me in The Middle" by Jessie Ware explains the relationship between Anastasia and Christian. Ana has admitted to Christian that she's not the submissive type. So they need to find something that works for the both. And Christian (being the business man he is) through various contracts finds a "middle" for their sexual relationship to co-exist. When the lyrics say, "And with each passing day, I grow a little bit uncertain", is exactly the way Ana felt in her relationship with Christian as time moved on.

"You're the fear, I don't care
Cause I've never been so high
Follow me to the dark
Let me take you past our satellites
You can see the world you brought to life, to life.

Yeah, I'll let you set the pace
Cause I'm not thinking straight
My head spinning around I can't see clear no more
What are you waiting for?"

Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do" is basically Christian and Ana's song. It plays when Christian sweeps Anastasia off her feet and takes her out to see the Seattle skyline in his helicopter. The lyrics are ultimately a conversation between a couple. The guy is clamoring for the chance to show the girl how much he cares for her. And the woman is trusting him wholeheartedly and lets the guy takes control. In a page out of Alladin, Ana is excited and taken by surprise at this gesture. Although she is hesitant at first, when she lets go and trusts Christian she is rewarded with the experience of a lifetime.

"My wicked tongue
Where will it be?
I know if I'm onto you
I'm on to you
On to you, I'm on to you
On to you, you must be on to me.

You want me?
I walk down the hallway
You're lucky
The bedroom's my runway
Slap me!
I'm pinned to the doorway
Kiss, bite, fuck me."

Beyoncé's "Haunted" was especially remixed for this film and represents the hold Ana and Christian have on each other. The music is fittingly introduced when Christian blindfolds and binds Ana. She is helpless to do anything but fully giver herself to him. The theme of haunting is true that the person is unable to stop visiting the other. They are each other's ghost haunting each other because of love.

"Lonely float got in the way
You are the feel, and knew it anyway
Take a chance, it wasn't what you know
Take my hand, and don't let go

Tell her on how you feel,
Give her every say she needs to hear
Give your heart, and say come take it
And she will see you're a good man."

Known as the "virginity" song for those who've watched the film, this song plays when Anastasia engages in her first-ever sexual encounter. Thought of as "vanilla sex", Christian is sweet and tender to her. Christian reflects the lyrics in the song by the way he courts her before their first night together. The way Sia sings the lyrics so delicately symbolizes the beauty of their love making. Halfway through the track, the other instruments join together with Sia's vocals to create a beautiful and harmonious combination.

"I'll never be your beast of burden
My back is broad but it's a hurting
All I want is for you to make love to me

I'll never be your beast of burden
I've walked for miles my feet are hurting
All I want is for you to make love to me."

The Rolling Stones "Beast of Burden" plays after Christian and Ana's first night together. A "beast of burden" is basically someone who stays around and messes everything up. Even though she has her reservations, she's determined to keep up with Christian. She wants to give and not just take. So in a gesture of good faith, she cooks for Christian and does so with a great attitude. After all, she'd just had good sex with the man of her dreams. What isn't there to be happy about?

"Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go away and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
I'm on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
I can take you higher
I'm on fire."

AWOLNATION's beautiful and melodic cover on Bruce Springsteen song "I'm on Fire" is about the sexual tension and longing between Christian and Ana. For Ana's sake, he's taking it slow and tending to her needs. However, there's that side of him that can't wait to introduce her into his world. When AWOLNATION sings, "At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet and a freight train running through the middle of my head. Only you can cool my desire." Clearly, the song exudes Christian's sexual desires and intentions.

"Got me looking so crazy right now
Your love's got me looking so crazy right now
Got me looking so crazy right now
Your touch got me looking so crazy right now (your love)

Hoping you'll save me right now
Your kiss got me hoping you'll save me right now (your love)
Looking so crazy in love
Got me looking, got me looking so crazy in love."

The remix of Beyoncé's hit-single "Crazy In Love" is featured not only in the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer but also in the movie. It plays when Anastasia enters the playroom for the first time. This song is perfect for this scene and here's why. Anastasia is a smart and independent woman yet she pursues the relationship with Christian against her better judgement. Anastasia's lust for him is her undoing. She knows that she should find someone or be with some else. But, she can't help it. His touch, looks, and smell are all intoxicating to her.

"When you arouse the need in me
My heart says yes indeed in me
Proceed with what you're leading me to

It's such an ancient pitch
But one I wouldn't switch
'Cause there's no nicer witch than you."

Frank Sinatra's "Witchcraft" is a personal number from Christian Grey's iPod playlist. After a night of passion and food, Christian takes Ana by the hips and prances her around his condo. The song describes the hold and affect that Ana has over him. The lyrics explain a man and a woman and her "witchcraft" that keeps him coming. The taboo that Frank Sinatra speaks of could mean the relationship or her personality. But, his affection for her makes him not care. The scene is playful and nice as Sinata sings Christian's thoughts out loud.

"I had a dream I was dying
But I found nobody there
And if one last night is all that we've been given
Let's live it like we care

For one last night
For one last night."

Vaults "One Last Night" is essentially a victory song for Christian and Anastasia's relationship. At this point in the film, the honey moon phrase is over and they've gotten to know each other. When they go gliding, it's after the whips, balls, chains and meeting her parents. At this point, there is no doubt they are meant for each other. The act of hang gliding in itself is dangerous but it is also care-free. In this moment, Ana feels courageous and confident not only in her relationship but herself.

"I don't have to remind you, oh oh
It's my need to confine you, oh ohhh
I see your face every time I'm with somebody else
Can't you see that I want you? (Put your feelings behind you)
I don't have to remind you, oh oh (I don't have to remind you, oh)"

Another contribution by the talented musical artist The Weeknd, "Where You Belong" plays during the end credits of the film. Speaking to Christian's inner ambitions, it's a song that confesses his love and more importantly, lust for Ana. When the lyrics declares, "I don't have to remind's my need to confine you." It speaks to Christians need to be in control. Anastasia is feisty and again by her own admission, not submissive. Nevertheless, Christian loves it anytime Ana puts him in control.

"I believe, I believe there's love in you
Grid locked on the dusty avenues
Inside your heart, just afraid to go

I am more, I am more than innocent
But just take a chance and let me in
And I'll show you ways that you don't know."

This contribution by the talented musical artist Skylar Grey, " I Know You" plays is the second song played during the end credits of the film. The song speaks about walls Christian have because of his wretched past. Skylar's lyrics are like Anastasia's words telling him to let his guard down. Through the lyrics she's pleading with him to trust her. Ana knows the man Christian is capable of becoming and the beautiful future they will have together.
