47 Songs about Overcoming Obstacles, Adversity, Hard Times, Challenges and Not Giving Up

Updated on April 10, 2017
Nalini Marquez profile image

Nalini has an ear for curating good music. Chances are she's made (or will eventually make) a list that fits your musical needs.

Who needs music and what kind of music do you need?

It does not matter who you are or where you come from, we have all experienced hard times in our lives. Because music is one tool people use to reflect on the past and process emotion, I've compiled this list of 47 songs to help. So when you're experiencing hard times or if you just need a little pick-me-up, listen here.

These songs are feel-better, keep-going, it-gets-better songs about getting through hard times and overcoming adversity, challenges, and obstacles. I've ranked them according to the strength of their message and the universal applicability/relatability of the music and message. There are a wide range of genres represented here so whether you like pop or country or opera, you'll find something that resonates for you.

I realize that many of these songs could be interpreted as female singers singing about men and relationships (or an implied significant other) which, while empowering, may not necessarily be equally relatable to both men and women or to people whose tough times are not related to relational hardship. But the "you" they sing to could be anything or anyone. Remember, it's the thought that counts with respect to the message! Listen with an open mind and you might realize the words also apply to you.

Dedicate these songs to your hardship, adversity, burden, mountain, or challenge. Sing them to the pains of your soul. Sing to God, the universe, and/or whatever you believe in. Sing to your cat. Sing to whatever you need to, overcome those challenges, and go forward.

Music that makes you feel powerful and strong!

My two favorites have to be Journey and Natasha Bedingfield. But al of these songs like you said have a way of making you know that it's not just about that moment but getting through those tough times. Great list and great job!

Hi Alecia, thank you; I appreciate it! Ranking them was difficult because there are favorites, favorites for specific things/feelings/challenges, and favorites for life in general/all types of challenges. I'm glad that you had favorites in the list and that you saw the getting-through-the-tough-times aspect of the other songs too--which means the songs work! :-)

Hi MelChi, thank you so much! I appreciate it! I am glad you found the list inspiring and that you have some favorites on this list, especially because I wanted it to be inspiration for others!

Your favorites are a few of the ones I had trouble ranking because they were strong in the musical quality and message but not as universal/relate-able; I would have ranked those higher if it weren't for that. I'm still debating about replacing "Firework" with "Stronger."

Hi Sunny Patel, thank you for your suggestions and for commenting! I've been listening to the songs you suggested and I really like them. "Hall of Fame" works great for this song list. The narrative of "Remember the Name" is about rapping and making success from there, but something about the song can get a person pumped up and motivated, especially with the chorus. Thanks!

This is a great list so I hate to break it to you but Dog Days by Florence and the Machine is actually about domestic abuse. It's a very commonly missunderstood song. I didn't really get it until I picked apart the lyrics but a lot of Florence Welsh's songs are about abuse. The 'dog days' are the happy early days of the relationship (dog days literally transaltes to the hottest days of summer). The part when she says 'and I never wanted anything from you, except all you had and what was left after that too' is spoken from the man's perspective and it's what he's saying to his lover. She has to get rid of her love for him and run and hide in order to survive.

Sorry to change this song for you, it's just a bit warped hearing it like it's a happy empowering song.

    Hi SomeRandom,

I did not realize that Dog Days by Florence and the Machine was about domestic abuse, and it’s not a song that I’ve analyzed—which in hindsight, might have been good to do! After reading your comment, I looked into some additional analysis of the song and it’s definitely not about what I had thought it was about. Glad to have learned something new and I have a new appreciation for this song (even though it’s not a fit here). Thank you for taking the time to let me know about the song and I will modify this list accordingly.

I think that Linkin Park's song Lost in the Echo, from their album Living Things, should be on this list. It's helped me a lot recently, especially the lyrics 'you can tell 'em all now, I don't back up, I don't back down, I don't fold up, and I don't bow, I don't roll over, don't know how, I don't care where the enemies are, Can't be stopped, all I know; go hard, Won't forget how I got this far' and 'So you can let it be known, I don't hold back, I hold my own, I can't be mapped, I can't be cloned, I can't C-flat, it ain't my tone, I can't fall back, I came too far, Hold myself up and love my scars'.

As i said, it's got me through a lot, maybe it could help someone else :)

    Thanks for reading.

    Added!

I hope it is able to help others as it has helped you. Thank you for taking the time to share it.

    Have a wonderful day,

I love "survivor" by Destinys child, as it is sentimental to me. I played this song to my mum when she was battling cancer and although it beat her in the end, she fought a great 7 year battle. This song depicts that struggle.

    Hi lilmissbookworm,

The fact that your mother fought a battle against cancer for 7 years says that your mother was more than a survivor, especially to battle for so long with something so difficult and painful.

I am sorry for your loss. I think you and your mother will come to mind when I hear this song now. You gave me a new perspective and a lot to think about and be thankful for. Thank you for taking the time and for sharing.

    Sincerely,

Hi suraj punjabi, I like those two songs too. It's interesting that your two favorites reflect related but different stages or approaches ("Letting it be"/learning to accept and finding the answer, and being able to achieve miracles through believing and/or once you believe). They're both part of important stages.

I will try to keep the hub updated with more songs when I can. :-)

I haven't heard most of the songs on the list, and haven't heard of many of the artists.

Some other songs I would recommend are "My Morning Song" by the Black Crowes," "Stuck in a Moment" by U2," "Thunder Road" by Bruce Springsteen, "Series of Dreams" by Bob Dylan.

In the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Penelope Cruz's character says to Captain Corelli, "What is there to sing about, anyway?" Corelli replies, "People sing when a marriage is celebrated, when a baby is baptized; men sing as they work, soliders sing as they march--and yes, there is singing when people die. I have always found something to sing about, and for that I cannot apologize."

Lots of good songs here! I have found from experience it's better to to stay away from the downer songs when you're down, that only makes it worse, better to listen to uplifting songs in times like that. I like this hub and the way you've put it together, great job!

Hi Robert Levine, thank you for the comment and song suggestions! I haven't heard those songs but I will check them out :-).

And thank you for sharing that quote with me. I haven't seen Captain Corelli's Mandolin but based on that quote, it seems like the movie would be sad (especially since Cruz's character sees nothing to sing about). As a quote, and I imagine in the context of the movie, it's a good reminder of the importance and power of music/singing at important points in life, in hard times, and when we can't find things to sing about.

Hi bluebird, I am glad you found some songs you like and thank you for the positive and encouraging comment! Downer songs in moderation can sometimes help in catharsis up to a certain point and only for certain states, but after that it only makes things worse and feeds negative things. As an overall approach and process, I agree with you and think it's better to listen to uplifting songs in times like that.

I can definitely say that when I am feeling down or that my confidence has taken a toll I tend to look for songs which are going to bring good vibes and lift up my spirits. Music has a very powerful effect on how people think and feel; therefore, songs like this can be extremely helpful.
