Finding quality free sheet music online isn't always easy. There's a ton of music to sort through to find the good stuff, and not all of it is legal to download. The following list provides you with links to 20 of the best websites to find free and legal printable sheet music.

  1. MakingMusicFun.net—Making Music Fun, launched in 2007, is the #1 elementary music education site. The site features 1.5K pages of elementary music education resources, including music theory worksheets, composer biographies, and almost 500 well-written sheet music arrangements for piano, guitar, and band/orchestra instruments - most of which are free. All arrangements are in PDF format, and you can listen to them first.
  2. IMSLP/Petrucci Music Library—IMSLP is an extensive, community-built library of public domain sheet music. This site includes 114K works by 14K composers. Scores are scanned and uploaded to the site in PDF format. All content is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.
  3. MutopiaProject.orgMutopia Project is one of the largest quality sheet music sites with 2051 pieces of music that are free to download, modify, print, copy, distribute, perform, and record. All of the sheet music is in the Public Domain or under Creative Commons licenses and offered in PDF, MIDI, and LilyPond file formats.
  4. PianosongDownload.comPianosong Download is owned by a piano teacher, Julie Lind. The site features many quality pieces of free piano sheet music in levels 1-3, intermediate and advanced, Christmas, and Hymn sheet music. The site also offers lead sheets and an interactive piano chord chart.
  5. FreeSheetPianoMusic.comFree Sheet Piano Music offers quality classical, popular and original worksheet music by French pianist, professor, and composer Galva for piano solo in three levels, a) very easy, b) easy, and c) medium.
  6. Chromatik.comChromatik is a paid site, but deserves mention because it offers one of the few chances you'll ever have to get a free and legal download of a Disney song, Beatles music, or songs by major artists like Adele and Celine Dion. The free download is only good once, so choose well.
  7. Free-Scores.comFree Scores includes contemporary, classical and educational free sheet music for all instruments. The purpose of the site is to provide a platform to publish for composers, arrangers, and publishers. All arrangements are in PDF format, and there are audio files most of the time so you can listen to them. The site is donation supported.
  8. Kreusch-Sheet-Music.netKreusch Sheet Music is an archive of hundreds of pieces of free sheet music. Navigate this German site with the search tool for composers or works. You can sign up for their newsletter if you'd like to be informed about new free scores in their archive.
  9. GMajorMusicTheory.orgG Major Music Theory, launched in 2011. It was created by Gilbert DeBenedetti, a music theory instructor at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, as well as the Pittsburgh High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). In addition to offering a collection of music theory resources, the site offers free sheet music for piano and guitar. The piano and guitar sheet music is divided into beginner-intermediate levels. All arrangements are in PDF format, and you can listen to them first.

The site is divided into piano music, vocal music, guitar tabs, lead sheets, music ed tools and autism & music. In the piano music category you’ll find free sheet music for primary level students through intermediate, major scales, and more.
  11. MusicNotes.comMusic Notes is largely a paid sheet music site. However, they do have a small collection of sheet music arrangements, with a monthly featured freebie. The arrangements on this site are always of high quality, so even though the freebie offering is small it's worth a mention.
  12. Take-a-Piano-Sheet-Music-Break.comTake a Piano Sheet Music Break was created in 2103, and features a nice range of free classical, popular, Christian, Christmas and patriotic sheet music for piano, as well as a section devoted to beginners.
  13. Rowy.netRowy features classic works for solo instrument. Navigation around the site isn't as easy as it could be, but the content is worth having if you want to spend the time. The biggest help you get is the triple-dash icon in the top corner that lets you narrow things down to a category. All arrangements are available in PDF format.
  14. PianoBragSongs.comPiano Brag Songs was founded by Jared and Neil Johnson, two brothers who wanted to motivate young people to keep learning. Their site offers both free sheet music and affiliate links to sheet music on sites like SheetMusicPlus.com. The songs are sometimes simplified, shorter songs. Basically, songs you can learn fast and "brag."
  15. EasySheetMusic.comEasy Sheet Music offers a collection of piano classics, opera classics, and boogie & blues. The site provides a subscription service, though you can download up to 3 selections each day for free.
  16. Classical-Scores.comClassical Scores features 1256 free scores by 56 composers. The website allows you to search by composer or instrument via the drop down menu.
  17. Choral Music Public DomainCPDL was launched in 1998, and is committed to sharing free choral and vocal scores and texts. There are currently more than 24,679 choral and vocal works by 2,789+ composers.
  18. NoelNoelNoel.comNoel, Noel, Noel features beginner (big note) through intermediate level sheet music arrangements, and family fun ideas for the Christmas holidays.
  19. FluteTunes.comFlute Tunes was created in 2009 to provide flute students with everything they need to practice and grow as young musicians. The site includes free sheet music - sometimes with piano accompaniments, MP3's so you can listen to the music for rhythms and style, a metronome, flute fingerings, scales, and a glossary of terms.
