Guitar and Piano Chords for Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

If you came here to learn that "Alleluia song from Shrek", you will find chords and backing tracks for Hallelujah, links for Bird on the Wire, Suzanne, and Leonard Cohen songs but first a little about the master himself.

I first heard Canadian musician and poet Leonard Cohen, the composer and original Hallelujah singer, as a child back in the 1960s. Leonard Cohen seemed old to me in 1967 although he was only 31 when he released his first record, but his songs were so wonderful! Leonard Cohen's first album in 1967 was my introduction to that gravelly voice and dark poetry. His voice still has a magical personality that fascinates and draws you in. The passion and experience combined with his dark voice make him even more compelling today! I was in British Columbia when he performed in London last year and we all sat glued to the TV screen for his live concert.

Undoubtedly, Hallelujah is one of Leonard Cohen's greatest songs. This page is a celebration of that great song. Hallelujah is such a classic song and is not that hard to play. I want to share Hallelujah lyrics, chords, Hallelujah backtracks and recorded versions. I would like to show you how you can easily play it on the guitar. Above all, I want to say Hallelujah for the talent of Leonard Cohen

If you want to read Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah Lyrics, buy Hallelujah piano music or buy Hallelujah guitar TAB this is the place to be. There are also tips on how to play the chords and these are freely given. You will find Hallelujah vocal sheet music here and if you are looking for a Hallelujah accompaniment track, there is a selection here too. Have fun and enjoy the words and music of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah! Why not also take some time to listen to the alternative versions and see what an amazing and versatile song this really is?

Fingerstyle Guitar Piece "Hallelujah" Style - "Hallelujah" Piece in the Style of Jeff Buckley

Guitar study in Jeff Buckley style
Guitar study in Jeff Buckley style

You could accompany yourself singing the song Hallelujah by playing something quite similar to this fingerstyle guitar piece above. It is basic TAB with simple chords and a few hammers and pulls. Buying the guitar music, of course, would give you something far more accurate than this, or anything you might discover on a TAB site, but I like playing my Hallelujah accompaniment in this style.

I fell in love with fingerstyle guitar in the late 1960s. One of my favorites then was Classical Gas, contemporary also with Leonard Cohen. Leonard Cohen, Mason Williams and Ralph McTell were my heroes! I spent ages learning to play Classical Gas from the sheet music.

Looking For A Hallelujah Accompaniment Track?

Hallelujah backing tracks are easy to get! If you are a singer, the chances are you might want a Hallelujah accompaniment track rather than a chord chart. Here are some examples of professional Hallelujah accompaniment track I have put together.

Lyrics to "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen

Well, that is not how Cohen spells it. Unless you are searching for lyrics to Alleluia the hymn, you probably need these lyrics. This is one of many versions of the song, and it is not complete. If you really listen to it well, you will see that each performance of Hallelujah is different: This is hardly surprising, as Leonard Cohen said he drafted over 80 verses! Basically the Hallelujah sheet music for sale is an official, fixed version of Leonard Cohen's song, I have searched for different versions too, notably Celtic Thunder' Hallelujah and Canadian Tenors Hallelujah but found them hard to track down. Jeff Buckley Hallelujah might be available in a guitar TAB book but I am not certain if it is still in print, since his death.

Now I've heard there was a secret chord

That David played, and it pleased the Lord

But you don't really care for music, do you?

It goes like this

The fourth, the fifth

The minor fall, the major lift

The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof

You saw her bathing on the roof

Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you

She tied you

To a kitchen chair

She broke your throne, and she cut your hair

And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before

I know this room, I've walked this floor

I used to live alone before I knew you.

I've seen your flag on the marble arch

Love is not a victory march

It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah

The Master at Work on Hallelujah Lyrics...

Incomparable! Leonard Cohen is the embodiment of his own songs. His dark poetry digs down into the soul of singer and listener alike! Leonard Cohen guitar and singing always moved me deeply. Hallelujah for Leonard Cohen!

Canadian Tenors sing Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen of course was a gravelly voiced bass/baritone and that gives his music much of its dark quality, but the Canadian Tenors sing this one beautifully!

Hallelujah Chords in G

Here are the chords for Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah in the Key of G. This is a much better key for the average singer to perform in as it is neither too high nor too low. For those wanting to get it absolutely right I would still say buy Hallelujah sheet music, but for those less happy making their arrangement from a piano score, this will work nicely.

Different Versions of Hallelujah Sheet Music

Looking to buy Hallelujah piano music?

If you want to buy hallelujah sheet music there is one version currently available. This is the same for all song covers unless special permission is sought to publish a different transcription. Leonard Cohen hallelujah sheet music is the version. If you are looking for Hallelujah sheet music K.D. Lang you are unlikely to find it and will have to work out the differences yourself. Looking for Hallelujah piano sheet music with lyrics? The standard version by Leonard Cohen has the most common version of the lyrics, but there probably as many versions as there are original verses! You have to listen to the performances you like best and choose the verse appropriate to yourself as K.D.Lang has done.

If you want to buy the piano music sheet of Hallelujah in Shrek, that is available here. The Canadian Tenors Hallelujah sheet music is not available as far as I can see. As for free K.D.Lang keyboard sheet music - sorry - if you find a site offering it at best you will find they are offering an illegal download, at worst you may well pick up something really nasty on your computer. If you want K.D.Lang Hallelujah sheet music free you will have to work it out for yourself. Hopefully a page like this will help you work it out and as far as I know that is not illegal for personal use, but buying the music for Hallelujah helps keep musicians employed in music so they can continue to entertain us with new songs and not have to give it all up to get a day job. As a musician who also HAS a day job, it clips your wings far too much when all you really want to do is write, record and sing....

For me, much as I love Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah and Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah gives me chills, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is his song. The ultimate dark, poetic lyrics of a genius. Thank you Leonard Cohen for recording that first album and introducing a generation to a wonderful sound that went beyond the 1960s folk underground to take the world by storm!

Love Leonard Cohen and I love all the versions of his song Hallelujah. Of course Leonard Cohen is the original and his version is special, but it's such a great song it works in all the versions! Love Jeff Buckley's version which has been performed by many, and I heard an a cappella version which is really cool too.

@LadyFlashman: Absolutely! His voice was wonderful. KD's performance is full of emotion too and quite wonderful, but Buckley had a kind of angelic edge to his voice!

@jptanabe: Leonard Cohen is just something special - even still to be performing at his age! We couldn't take our eyes off the show when he sung Hallelujah. Thanks both for visiting :)

Thanks so much! My ex-husband father always told us that he was Leonard Cohen's roommate at Harvard - apparently Cohen didn't go to Harvard, so there must be more to the story! Anyway, because he was Canadian and such a wonderful performer and songwriter we listened to a lot of Cohen when I was first married. Gagun (dad in law) is in heaven now, so I'll never be able to get all the details. Angel blessed - for bringing me K.d Lang's version as well as the transposition for other voices you found.

I love Hallelujah. A friend of mine, Gary Jess, has a lovely piano recording of it as well.

Naturally, Allison Crowe's performance of "Hallelujah" is my favourite. It's such a beautiful song - every interpretation has its own merits - and, Leonard Cohen's gift reaches us all in many ways.

My son plays guitar and I'll pass your lens onto him as I'm sure he'd love to play Hallelujah. I think my favorite performance is by K D Lang, but no matter who performs this song usually does a great job.

@Susan Zutautas: K D Lang has an amazing voice and I think she really does Hallelujah justice. Jeff Buckley makes the hair on my neck stand up! I hope your son enjoys this Hallelujah guitar chord lesson.
