Here's How to Hold a Guitar

Whether you have an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar, learning how to hold your guitar is the most important thing to master as a beginner. Below you'll find three approaches for how to hold your guitar. Ensure, when using approaches one and two, that the neck of the guitar does not point down. Some people find approach three to help with this if they are having trouble.

Here are the basics on how to hold your instrument.

How to Hold Your Guitar: Sitting Down

Approach 1

  1. Sit with your back straight and legs open.
  2. Ensure the guitar sits below your chest.
  3. Position your guitar on your right leg (if right-handed).
  4. Your left hand will form a right angle with your back, to ensure the best playing

Approach 2

  1. Sit with your back straight and legs crossed.
  2. Ensure the guitar sits below your chest.
  3. Position your guitar on your right leg (if right-handed).
  4. Your left hand will form a right angle with your back, to ensure the best playing.

Approach 3

  1. Sit with your back straight and legs open.
  2. Ensure the guitar sits below your chest.
  3. Position your guitar on your left leg (if right-handed) - the neck should be pointing upward
  4. Your left hand will form a right angle with your back, to ensure the best playing.
