What's a Hair Metal Song?

Hair metal (also known as glam metal, pop metal and Sunset Strip rock) is a genre of hard rock music from the 1980s, played by glam rock stars who spent as much time primping their hair, makeup and flamboyant clothes for Headbangers Ball videos as they did creating their music.

While being labeled a hair band has had negative connotations, the genre remains popular, and '80s hair metal bands continue to perform their greatest hits for rock lovers around the world.

So pump your fist, bang your head, and put on your lipstick for this list of the Top 100 Hair Band songs.

Formed in Los Angeles, Mötley Crüe took the glam metal look to the extreme.

Bon Jovi keeps showing up on metal band lists...but they were rock and roll, not metal!! And also, I may have missed them, but did Metallica show up anywhere? If not, I'm really going to be pissed.

Pete on January 05, 2017:

There should be way more Van Halen

Flip on December 14, 2016:

Running with the Devil is from the 70's

DoveFreexrolo on March 02, 2016:

I believe that is one of the most important info for me. And i’m satisfied reading your article. But want to commentary on few normal issues, The site taste is ideal, the articles is actually excellent : D. Excellent task, cheers

Jim on June 06, 2015:

Great list man! I grew up in the 80's and this captures many of the more popular songs.

What about this song, what about that song. Come on guys. Just because it was your favourite song back in the day doesn't mean it must make the list.

And to the guy that said Europe should be on the list. I grew up in the 80's. They were a joke then, and are still a joke now.

Iron Maiden? Yes, it belongs on the list. Hair Metal (as you kids call it now) enthusiasts also listened to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, even though it was not hair metal. Same with Van Halen. It was all part of that era. Remember, there was no internet back then so things progressed slower back then.

Jason on March 24, 2015: called this article the "Best 80's Hair Metal Songs" and "Running with the Devil" was released in 1978...

james on December 14, 2014:

WTF! where is hanoi rocks?! the founding-father of 80's glam hair metal!

Dokken003 on November 20, 2014:

Dokken songs that could have been added:

Dream Warriors

Heaven Sent

Back for the Attack

Breaking The Chains

Mr. Scary

Matt on March 10, 2014:

Not a bad list except Runnin with the Devil is one of the best 70's classic rock songs. Not a 80's hair band song. That's like putting Freebird on this list. Just because Van Halen later became a bubble gum hair band they started in the 70's and the first 2 albums were very much from that era.

michele on January 10, 2014:

wish I could find all these songs on one cd

Blau on December 09, 2013:

The #1 song was a B-Side to Eruption released in May of 1978 :-P

JT on November 20, 2013:

If Iron Maiden is not hair metal which I agree, neither is Queensryche!

gsurvivor on July 23, 2013:

Motley Crue all the way! \m/ Loved the hub, a definite vote up from me! :)

Ali Torabi from NY on July 21, 2013:

Nice Selection.

rob on June 24, 2013:

Great List! I agree with another post, Where's Triumph!!!! Amazing vocals, guitar drums etc from the "other" 3 man Canadian Band.

Bill Billson on June 19, 2013:

Hands down whoever made this list is pathetic, home sweet home - motley crue isn't even on the list while a few could be dropped, especially out of the top ten

gezginrocker on April 19, 2013:

Queensryche? Eyes of a Stranger? Glam Metal? I stopped reading the list after seeing that.

Valérie on December 16, 2012:

And EUROPE ? EUROPE is one of the best band in this category

davyfetons on December 08, 2012:

well dennis if your still hanging around this is there web address and some info , there there most competitive in the game ,say mr davy fetons

ManChild on October 07, 2012:

murrr on September 17, 2012:

no w.a.s.p. :(

no dream warriors - dokken?

love me some motley crue though

Lou on August 09, 2012:

I love the fact that iron maiden isn't included in this list. Nicely placed at the bottom to show the difference between a hair band and non-hair band. Great list

sara on August 02, 2012:

Pedro on June 16, 2012:

I love Def Leppard but that's a lot on that list O.O

AzTide on May 14, 2012:

The only problem is that the Number 1 song Runnin' With The Devil - Van Halen.. It was recorded in 77 and came out in 78.. But still a pretty good list..

Nick on April 18, 2012:

Where is Kix?

Britny Fox Ruled the 80s on April 18, 2012:

Britny Fox ain't on there? Come on, Long Way To Love is the best damn hair metal song ever! And Girlschool has one of the best MTV videos. You really should re-consider this egregious snub of a kickass band.

big8rack on April 17, 2012:

Dude, good list. Although this list needs to be the top 1,000 songs to really do the hair band - glam era justice!!!

And if you want to include late 70's early 80's rock like AC/DC, Judas Priest, etc. then the list will have to be the top 10,000...

alejandro on April 14, 2012:

great list thank god i finallly saw tesla on their but for van halen the more popular song is jump other then that great list

Chris123 on April 14, 2012:

You know what disgusts me, No one ever mentions "Triumph"

They are the best hard rock bands of the 80's. They have like 2000-10000 hits on youtube which is just insanely low. Get the word out about TRIUMPH! best singer, best solo's. Also they are the best engineered music you will see other then huey lewis, def leppard, or rush.

jason on March 26, 2012:

i like bon jovi i am a big fan of bon jovi i like the songs like she don't know me runaway and burning for love and living on a prayer and you give love a bad name and more songs on March 18, 2012:

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on March 11, 2012:

Walkin Shoes ain't on there? My sincerest apologies for this grave oversight!

roman1 on March 11, 2012:

rocrollin on March 09, 2012:

DJChrisC on March 01, 2012:

Raevyn14 from Tecumseh, Oklahoma on February 24, 2012:

that's one awesome list, most of my favorites is on there

TheHeavyReview on February 16, 2012:

Cool article, my top three are (not in order):

Guns N' Roses- Welcome to the Jungle

Motley Crue- Dr. Feelgood

Skid Row- Monkey Business

jason on February 07, 2012:

electric circus w.a.s.p

Helldwarf on January 27, 2012:

That's a nice list of songs BUT no one has noticed that the #1 song is from 1978...

ron on December 28, 2011:

what about firehouse, partied in the 80s best era ever

Savatage on December 27, 2011:

I think some people missed the fact that this is a "hair metal" list. Although most of the suggested additions are great bands, certainly some are NOT hair metal bands. I won't point fingers so the transgressors don't have to feel bad about themselves.

Shreddr09 on December 14, 2011:

Lynch Mob - Wicked Sensation

Alexandra Leigh on December 13, 2011:

slip of the lip-Ratt did I miss it?

UnderDawg on December 07, 2011:

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Electric Angels Rattlesnake Kisses is not only a great song from an underrated band, but it has a young Christina Applegate in the video. WIN WIN!!!

UnderDawg on December 07, 2011:

How do we know?

"Ace is back and he told you so!!"

Frehley RULES!!

UnderDawg on December 07, 2011:

I really enjoyed the list. Love all those songs. I have a few personal faves to add. First, ANYTHING from the Electric Angels. (1990 but close enough). Hurricane's I'm on To You or Over the Edge. XYZ's Inside Out.Thunder's Dirty Love. the Riverdogs Toy Soldier( i love vivian campbell!) Hardline's Taking Me Down. although some of these are early 90's they still count to me. Oh yeah, and Frehley's Comet with Rock Soldiers! that song kicks MAJOR ass!!

Just my opinions

Erod on November 12, 2011:

that should definitely make a damn 5 disk boxset of those 100 songs I'd buy it

Blitzen73 on November 11, 2011:

Bon Jovi discovered Cinderella? I know they discovered Skid Row...didn't know they got Cinderella their start, as well. Cool! Love Bon Jovi and was happy to see a lot of their work well as most of the others. Long live 80's hair bands!

Lee on November 10, 2011:

No Billy Squier - The Stroke? Serious oversight, probably could have knocked off a couple of songs by artists who already had one on the list like Poison or Motley Crue.

Brodie on October 25, 2011:

I noticed that Play With Me by Extreme wasn't on the list... Nuno Bettencourt was a highly overlooked guitar player

Shane on October 22, 2011:

There should definitely be more leppard so many underrated songs like gods of war, die hard the hunter, billys got a gun, comin under fire plus, where's animal rocket and too late for love

Kami no kinzoku on October 10, 2011:

This finally proves my point to my dad that Cinderella has amazing songs out there.

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on October 07, 2011:

I do NOT consider Iron Maiden "Hair Metal" thus it isn't included in a list with Enuff Z'Nuff, get it? It's a compliment.

Tim on October 06, 2011:

A lot of good bands, but with no Iron Maiden, the list is useless.

savannah Wolf on October 04, 2011:

Don N. "Here me Calling" Not a hair band but I think you were hearing Steve Miller Band's Here Me Calling

debbie on October 01, 2011:

i was surprised not to see faster pussycat on the list for house of pain.its a great song and a great band.

debbie on October 01, 2011:

so glad to see that someone else appreciates enuff znuffs music.i love them.they so should have made it bigger than they did, they are so talented. on September 28, 2011:

does anyone remember the song about whiskey and water, that's the only lyrics I can remember, but it's NOT

the "Tindersticks" it's some other band from back in the 90's.

Stainer on September 03, 2011:

Winger??? R U serious? I'm headed for an ear ache.

sonoo on September 02, 2011:

la guns need to be on the list the reason is that with la guns their would be no guns n roses so la guns rocks all their songs from 1988 to today rock n rolll

Josh Drew on August 31, 2011:

... Scorpians an Aersmith??? Their from the era, but they arent hair metal. if your gonna have them in there, you need to include AC/DC!?!

Where is L.A. Guns, Dio, Metallica, Europe and Duran Duran???

this list is a dive.

I am 16, unfortunatly i grew up in the wrong era, cuz im obsessed with hair metal. i love modern day thrash metal and scremo, but hair metal is what broke the bounderies, and make metal what it is today.

It's better to burn out, Than fade away!

Me on August 31, 2011:

What about Manfred Mann? They even wore HEAD bands and they have a LOT of hair...

sunshinedaystar on August 24, 2011:

Asher on August 06, 2011:

all amazing bands man but you are missing some songs. and bands for that matter lol. love how you put ratt in there though, they are one of my all time favorite bands. And I SEE WINGER lol by the way other than seventeen...i don't remember a single good song by them.

MathLizard from Reading PA on June 24, 2011:

I would definitely put Kiss Of Death and Mr. Scary on there...and maybe Dio's "The Last In Line", even though I watched the video for that one the other day and I wonder what the hell it was supposed to mean...

Ratt on June 23, 2011:

DJ Funktual (author) from One Nation Under a Groove on June 17, 2011:

What other Dokken tracks do you recommend?

MathLizard from Reading PA on June 17, 2011:

It's already been said by several responders to this hub, but I have to say it again...great list, but it needed more Dokken!

Motorhad on June 01, 2011:

Whitesnake > Insert Hair band

Indeed on June 01, 2011:

Yeah, Whitesnake's last 2 albums are way stronger than everything Guns n' Roses has ever put out, and way stronger than all that 30 Seconds of a Breaking Theory of a Nickelback in Three Days of Seether crap that is going on and all sound like the same shit.

But Motley Crue now kind of sucks.

JudasPriestrulez on May 30, 2011:

Guns n' Roses sucks and are overrated, they cannot nearly touch Whitesnake and Motley Crue's guitar work.

Don N. on May 03, 2011:

Cool list. The 80's was my generation's music. Smooth Up in ya by Bullet Boys is a great song.

CAN ANYONE HELP me on this. I had Hair Nation (Sat radio) on the other day and a song played that I really liked - about the only part I can recall is "Here me calling" or "Here the Calling" (it may have been "Do you" OR "can you" before that. I didn't write the info down at the time. All the google & youtube searches have been dead ends - not finding the actual Hair Band song I heard. I know that is not a lot of info to go off of, but does anyone have any ideas? THANKS!!!

Robert Renshaw on March 31, 2011:

i Agree with the list mostly but you forgot some good ones by alice cooper like: House of fire or Poison.

soccer14 on March 15, 2011:

HeadBanger on January 12, 2011:

This is actually one of the better lists I have seen for hair bands and their music, the only problem I have with it is Skid Row, though they came out in 1989 was not technically a hair band AND monkey business came out in 91, after the death of hair metal. All in all though Great list.

dustin thrift on January 02, 2011:

good list. im 16 and i can say you left a bunch of great songs off that really shoulda made it. i just kinda looked through it really quick, so forgive me if they are on the list, but what about Wicked sensation by lynch mob? or heartbreak blvd by shotgun messiah, or baby's on fire by great white, or shoot you full of love by vinnie vincent invasion?

Larry Vashon from Tampa Florida on January 01, 2011:

This list pretty much covers it all. Good work.

Larry Vashon

Harrison on December 27, 2010:

Awesome list but I don't think I saw Rocket by def leppard or Unskinny bop by poison. And forgive me for being wrong,Coz I'm 15, but what about some/more Alice Cooper or iron maiden. And I know it's more rock but what about Joan Jett?

PoisonOkie on December 16, 2010:

What about Mother Lovebone "Stardog Champion" or "Stargazer"

ernest mccracken on November 08, 2010:

i do have one thing to tell nolan fowler, both chris cornell and layne stayley were involved in bands that were catagorized as "grunge" not "hair metal".

BlackSteelStudBrett1953 on November 04, 2010:

Great job, boys!!!How 'bout Ozzy's "Crazy Train" though?(And I'm glad you included Quiet Riot's "Cum On,Feel The Noize" to this grouping, and Skid Row's "Eighteen And Life To Go should DEFINITELY not be ignored!!!)
