SPINN - Nashville Recording Artists
Hey Y'all; Nashville recording artists don't just reside in Music City. I now intend to expand my Nashville musician interview series with artists throughout the country. I want ya'll to meet as many country musicians as possible as their careers shine on.
While country music recording artists might not live in Nashville, they do perform there! Country music is global. While the majority of my readers live in the states, many also live in Europe, Asia and Australia and they love country music about as much as we do.
This interview with the country music band SPINN is unique and I am excited to introduce you to twin sisters who know how to rock out with their country tunes. Stephanie and Cheryl Lynn Spinner live in Westwood, New Jersey and recently won an impressive contest.
This is my first time interviewing twin musicians and I was curious how or if their responses would differ, this was a heck of a learning lesson for me. Steph and Cheryl were a pleasure to work with.
Join Sunshine and SPINN as they shine upon the country music industry.
Is There a Family History of Musical Talent?
Our entire family are music lovers! Our dad was in county choir in High School and his sister is a music teacher, our cousin is a drummer, other cousin plays piano, so yeah, I guess you could say music is in all of our blood!
Do You Have a Pre-Performing Ritual?
We can't eat anything but pizza before shows. How silly is that?
A Musician That Inspired You?
Dolly Parton has always been a huge inspiration to us. She has always been 100% real and has persevered through so much with an unwavering positive attitude, not to mention being one of the best songwriters in country music!
What Inspired Your Love of Music?
We've wanted to be in bands since we were very young. Kids Incorporated, California Dreams, The Mickey Mouse, and Gem and The Holograms were shows we would watch and dream about becoming the kids in those TV shows! Big aspirations early on from tiny tiny humans.
Would You Want a Record Deal or Prefer to be Indie?
We would love a record deal if a great opportunity came around! But we'll happily keep working and grinding independently until it does.
Did Y'all Have Vocal Training?
Besides singing in church choir, none.
Do You Write Your Own Songs?
We both write all of our songs together, along with one of our best friends from high school.
Do You Write For Other Musicians?
Being from New Jersey there aren't many country musicians around to collaborate with, but with our first trip to Nashville under our belts last week we are excited to immerse ourselves in the Nashville singer/songwriter scene from now on!
Which Instruments Do You Play?
We both play the piano, and Cheryl Lynn plays the Autoharp.
Do You Believe In The Muse Theory?
We believe that muses exist 100%. When we're writing a song, and we feel like the song finishes so smoothly and effortless that it almost "writes itself", that's when we know they're in the room inspiring us and guiding us along.
Most Famous Musician That You Met?
Does Jessica Simpson count as a musician? (Ha! Yes.)
How Long Have You Been in the Music Industry?
We've been playing music as a career for 8 years now, and have been a country band for the past 3.
How Did You Get Started in Country Music?
We went to school for Music Business at Monmouth University down the shore in New Jersey, so we got start playing shows in the legendary Asbury Park music scene. Playing at places like The Stone Pony and the Saint where Bruce Springsteen got his start, that was amazing to us.
Where Do You See Yourself in 5 Years?
We'd love for our music to be staples on country radio 5 years from now. Not only performed by us, but we'd love to be songwriters for other country artists as well, that would be a dream come true!
Advice For Artists New to the Industry?
We got amazing advice from a friend of ours in the industry: It always seems to get really hard right before you break, so stick with it! That was certainly the case recently with us, and if we didn't listen we never would have been in the Top 10 for NASH Next country stars in Nashville.
Most Memorable Career Moment So Far?
Winning NASH Next semi-finals at Hill Country BBQ in NYC then becoming the NASH Next 94.7 New York City Artists to represent in the Top 10 finals in Nashville!
Share With Us About Your NASH Next Win?
We were just in the NASH Next Country Star competition for Cumulus Radio! We won the NASH FM 94.7 New York City semi-finals, which lead us to be in the Top 10 Finals in Nashville! We are extremely proud of that, over 700 Country bands entered the contest from across the country!
How About a Story about a Song You Are Working On?
For our birthday this year we went with a friend of ours who is also a May baby to see Miranda Lambert and Brothers Osborne at Bethel Woods. We got to go to the Woodstock museum, galavant in the fields and then listen to them all sing Me and Bobby McGee together to close out the incredible show. The entire day was so inspiring that we went right home and wrote a new song that will be on our next EP.
Which Song That You Wrote is Most Special to Y'all?
We wrote our song, Goodbye Missouri, as an engagement present to two of our friends. To be able to give a gift like that to some amazing people and write a song about their unique love story is an indescribable feeling.
Which Musician Would You Want to Portray You In a Movie of Your Life?
Hmmmm that is a tough call since we would need 2 people. Or some excellent special effects to create a twin, so how about Jana Kramer?! She's just so adorable and has such a great voice. She smiles a lot, just like we do!
