What Happened to Pia Toscano After American Idol?
As Long As They're Looking...
Pia Toscano is the 23 year old American singer from New York's Howard Beach, who came ninth on the recent tenth season of American Idol, despite the fact she'd been largely expected to win.
Although she was eliminated shockingly early last season, every American Idol fan knew it wasn't the last they'd see of contestant Pia Toscano. And they were right. Even the ones who spell her name 'Pia Toscana', or 'Pia Tuscano' when they're looking her up on Google. (Hey, as long as they're looking.)
The Lovely Pia Toscano
Her elimination came as a shock to judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler, since she'd previously been thought of as a likely competition winner.
Tyler said, of the voters: 'They’re wrong. I don’t know what happened.... She’s beautiful. When she sings, she’s a bird.' Both viewers and media described Toscano's departure as one of the most surprising results in American Idol history.
Fans Twittered their support, including celebrities like Tom Hanks, Ellen DeGeneres, and Ashton Kutcher, who actually called Ryan Seacrest's phone in show to vent about it.
Nasty Nigel Weighs In...
'I know the results, so I know she was never a frontrunner,' said Nigel Lythgoe, the English producer of 'Pop Idol' and 'American Idol', and co-creator of 'So You Think You Can Dance'. Talking about suggestions that the elimination process should be changed so this sort of result doesn't happen, Nigel said: 'Maybe if we change the rules next season....so that America votes for the bottom three, and then the judges decide who goes home....I think that will be thought about.'
Though people are still fuming over Pia's unjust elimination, Nigel did have a point when he said, 'This is going to happen.... because the talent is so strong....every week it's going to happen, that a really strong singer goes.' So brace yourselves, 'American Idol' fans. There are more Thursday night surprises in store. Which all adds to the drama the fans love.
'Darkchild' Lends A Hand
But Pia Toscano hasn't been set back by this unexpected result. According to Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins, Grammy winning producer who worked on American Idol as a producer and mentor, and has produced hits for previous winner Kelly Clarkson, Toscano has been working hard on her forthcoming debut album.
'It’s a big, diva-sounding record,' Jerkins claims. 'It’s what I think I do best - that big Whitney, Mariah, Celine vibe.'
Pia Toscano's Music Career Since American Idol:
After being dropped, Toscano appeared on 'The Tonight Show' with Jay Leno, 'Live with Regis and Kelly', 'The Today Show', and 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show'. After losing 'American Idol', Toscano began dating Mark Ballas, a contestant on 'Dancing With the Stars'.
This past summer, Toscano went on tour with the 'American Idol' live show, from July to September 2011.On July 5, 2011, Interscope Records announced that Toscano had signed with them. Her debut single, 'This Time' came out on July 11. Her debut album is set for release in early 2012.
'I am thrilled to be joining the Interscope and 19 Recordings family,' Toscano said. 'Jimmy Iovine (the Interscope chairman) was an amazing mentor during my time on Idol and I’m looking forward to working with him and everyone at Interscope Records and 19 Recordings. This is a dream come true.'
Toscano is managed by 19 Entertainment, alongside fellow Idol contestants Haley Reinhart and James Durbin.
Pia Toscano 'This Time'
Pia Toscano Looking Stunning
A showcase for Toscano’s astonishing voice, 'This Time' was written by Esther Dean, who has previously written hits for many major recording artists.
Toscano, a beautiful brunette, looks stunning in the video. She performs on the beach, in a white long-sleeved blouse and shorts. There's also a scene where Pia drives a turquoise convertible while wearing huge sunglasses, that could have come straight out of Jennifer Lopez's 'Love Don't Cost A Thing' video.
Life After 'American Idol'? Talent Will Out.
Four months after the first single was released, fans are still waiting for the debut album. Of past American Idol winners, it's worth considering who's still around. Kelly Clarkson, the first winner, is still going strong, but it has to be said that, on the evidence of these past few years, the talent show route isn't the safe or easy option when it comes to a lasting, lifelong music career. Not that paying your dues in tiny venues and hoping for a big break is exactly a barrel of epic funtime either - something to bear in mind if you're thinking of a career in music.
Whether Pia Toscano will rise above that and make her own way remains to be seen. She obviously has the talent. Let's hope she gets the breaks. Her fans - and they're out there - will be hoping that she does.
