Female-Fronted Rock Bands of the 2000s

As the alternative and grunge movement began to fade away towards the end of the ‘90s, a number of bands started adopting a diverse range of musical influences in their sound. This resulted in a highly sophisticated modern rock style that became enormously successful in mainstream. Thanks to non-mainstream metal genres, the dual vocal trend started becoming excessively popular in mainstream rock. To add a textural classical vibe to their music, a number of rock bands started featuring classically-trained female vocalists on their songs.

The dramatic angelic power of thematic vocals and operatic vocals of female singers became the signature identity in many symphonic metal bands, gothic metal bands and power metal bands. Suddenly, female fronted rock bands with an emotionally-charged high-pitch vocal range came into the forefront. A large number of non-mainstream rock bands that incorporated female vocals had tremendous crossover success in mainstream genres. All-female rock bands and female-fronted rock bands changed the musical landscape for non-mainstream genres in rock music.

Female Rock Vocalists in the 2000s

As certain non-mainstream rock genres merged into mainstream with their crossover sound, a number of female musicians with a confluence of musical styles caught the attention of record labels. Aside from fronting bands, a number of female vocalists also began to pursue their solo careers. While a number of female musicians released albums with strong modern rock sensibilities, certain female musicians took lush vocals to a whole new level with pop-rock, indie, and emo influences. A number of female rock musicians had chart-topping success on mainstream rock charts and alternative music charts.

A new wave of female musicians with hard rock and heavy metal influences came to the forefront in the 2000s with their epic-sounding pop-metal albums, which a great number released independently. The soprano vocal range and the mezzo-soprano vocal range of female vocalists became the unique identity of many rock bands in the decade. A number of vocal coaches and classically trained vocalists had a great deal of success fronting symphonic metal bands and gothic metal bands. Female Rock Vocalists in the 2010s

As the dominance of all-female bands and female-fronted bands continued in the 2010s, a number of female vocalists who stated their careers in the 2000s fronting relatively unknown bands, found a firm foothold with their eclectic solo albums. As new forms of pop punk and power pop gained momentum, a number of bands started adopting an experimental approach for their albums. Alongside solo female artists, female duos starting incorporating electropop sounds to create a progressive form of dance-rock.

Although not many female metal bands were able to sustain the success they had in the 2000s, a number of these female vocalists released critically acclaimed solo albums in the 2010s. With metal bands forming numerous side-projects in this decade, a number of female crooners began to front or contribute with multiple bands across genres. While certain symphonic metal bands with female singers continued to mesmerize audiences, the genre began to lose steam as new forms of metal came to the forefront. The 2010s also witnessed a large number of collaborations with female musicians from diverse rock genres. Post 2020, the dynamics of audiovisual content of bands and artists changed considerably.

Although it is hard to predict what lies ahead for female musicians, one thing’s for certain, it’s going to be a new awakening for women in rock music.
