Hip Hop isn’t exactly the genre that most people think of when they try to come up with sad songs. After all, hip-hop is meant for dancing, for bouncing around to, and usually associated with acts that are all about ‘swag’ and ‘tude,’ not mopey lovelorn artists. However, there are a number of Korean HipHop songs that are so sad, they can even beat slow ballads in getting you to shed some of those tears. Out of all of them, here are the 10 saddest:

#1- 8:45 Heaven by Tiger JK

What is the song about?

8:45 Heaven’s lyrics tell the story of someone who’s grieving over the loss of a loved one, at times wishing for a way to rewind time and at times pleading with god to bring the deceased loved one back. It is said that Tiger JK wrote the song with his deceased grandmother in mind, and that the title refers to the time of day she passed away.

Saddest Lyrics

I should have done well while she was here,
I should have shouted it while she could hear
How much I love her
I tightly hold your hand without a response

#2- Champion by LeeSsang

What is the song about?

The song was written with the late Korean boxing champion Choi Yo-sam as inspiration. Choi passed away in 2008, after the last round in a fight due to brain trauma. It is said that the death was tragic because Choi could have lived if he was given treatment 30 minutes earlier. The song is also a tribute to the difficult life of boxers, as Choi Yo-sam is said to have had a difficult time looking for sponsors and used his own money for his last match.

Saddest Lyrics

'January 3rd, 2008, please hold on a little longer
despite my hope that everything is going to be all right
as long as he stays strong for one more day,
he leaves and my tears feel like an excuse.'

#3- Searchin' by Verbal Jint feat. The Quiett

Saddest Lyrics

Sometimes I skipped class with you and together we came to this place
The scribbles of that time have been erased and there’s only the chilly sunlight [shining] on the white line of the track
I adjust my collar, with my breath

Tears dropped all over the place

The blooming spring doesn’t come anymore
Cherry blossoms fall like snowflakes, it’s cold here
Sunshine falls like a snowstorm, it’s only cold for me

Because if you come close to me, your heart might catch a cold too

Saddest Lyrics

Your wide, broad shoulders
Dejectedly sagging after a few business failures

How hard and lonely and severe it must’ve been
Standing on stage, taking up the role of my father

After my heart is bruised up, it dreams of blossoming again
Even when seasons pass, when the time comes, you return

In my frozen heart, there is no light so I can’t see this love even more so I close my eyes
