Updated on October 22, 2019

Shannon is a passionate country fan who enjoys getting to know the artists and their music. She also loves spreading joy through interviews.

When country newcomer Steven John Simon heard “Story to Tell,” he knew he had to record it. There was an immediate connection with the concept of the song and the emotion behind the lyrics. The song depicts someone wishing to live life to the fullest. Simon also says that the idea of doing big things with his life is one of the reasons he joined the Marines.

After serving our country, Simon followed a family tradition and went to work in the oil fields. While doing that, he simultaneously began pursuing his dream of singing. As a single father, following his dream is a way to lead by example. Simon says that he wants them to realize that anything is possible if you’re willing to work for it and that no one will just hand it to you.

In addition to that, he also leads by example through his service to others. Simon is currently an Ambassador for the American Cancer Society. He also leads a yearly campaign to collect toys for the local Marine Corps Toys 4 Tots drive. There should be no doubt that his children are witnesses to what it means to be a kind and generous person. Plus, Simon's fans also reap the benefits of his actions.

Speaking of reaping benefits, Simon was gracious enough to answer some questions for me recently. His answers reveal more about who he is both as an artist and as a person. Below you can listen to some of his music while reading his answers. You're sure to enjoy the perks of discovering a new artist.

Steven John Simon—"Story to Tell"

Shannon Henry: What’s the best part about the Toys 4 Tots experience?

Steven Simon: It feels good to stay connected with the Marines; this is their initiative. I also love bringing people together for a good cause, especially for our children. No child should have to wake up Christmas morning without a toy under the tree.

SH: How did you become involved with the American Cancer Society?

SS: They reached out through my label Heart Songs Records.

SH: Please tell us more about what it is you do with the American Cancer Society.

SS: I am one of the "Real Men Wear Pink" Ambassadors for October. My goal is to raise at least $2500, and I am more than halfway there. I will be wearing pink throughout the entire month of October to help raise awareness.

No child should have to wake up Christmas morning without a toy under the tree."

— Steven John Simon regarding Toys 4 Tots

Steven John Simon—"Tongue Tied"

SH: Specifically as a family man, what challenges do you face while pursuing this career?

SS: My biggest challenge is definitely that there isn't enough time! Between work, kids' functions, and music gigs, it’s non stop. Sometimes things overlap and you have to get creative, lol. I have a great support system with my family that I honestly couldn’t do without.

SH: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

SS: Choices you make today will follow you for the rest of your life.

SH: What is the worst piece of advice you have ever received?

SS: Just drink one more; it’s still early!

Choices you make today will follow you for the rest of your life.

Steven Simon—"Life Is Good"

SH: If you could share the stage with anyone you choose, who would it be and why?

SS: That’s easy, my daughter! It’s such a great bonding experience for us. I beam with pride!

SH: Describe what a concert experience might be like for someone attending one of your concerts.

SS: Good country music! I try to put together a good mix of classic and modern, ballads and high energy songs. I just want the concert goers to leave my concerts satisfied.

SH: Are there any major life events that largely affected or influenced who you are as a musician?

SS: Some of my early childhood memories are watching my mother doing housework with all the windows in the house open, blasting old country music, and singing along. I’ve always loved the way music can put you in a certain mood.

SH: If you could share the stage with anyone you choose, who would it be and why?

SS: That’s easy, my daughter! It’s such a great bonding experience for us. I beam with pride!

Steve Holy Cover of "Good Morning Beautiful"

Just for Fun:

SH: What is your favorite dance move?

SS: When all else fails, I can always count on the running man! Lol.

SH: What fad or trend do you hope comes back?

SS: Family Sundays.

SH: What piece of entertainment do you wish you could erase from your mind so that you could experience for the first time again?

SS: Maybe not an entertainment, but driving alone for the first time! That feeling of freedom was like nothing else in the world!

SH: If you were a beverage, what would you be and why?

SS: Draft beer. I’m most appealing to the average Joe…

SH: If you could live in any time era, which one would it be and why?

SS: I believe I grew up in the greatest era ever, the 80’s! We had all we needed, people got along with each other, we played outside with our friends, technology hadn’t taken over, and there’s no proof of our mistakes! Lol.

        Hi manatita,

Good to see you. Thanks for coming by and leaving a nice comment for me.

I've actually been doing interviews for almost ten years now. Some of them on my HP profile are from a few years ago, but mostly, I just rather recently started posting them here on HP as well as my website. It made sense to do that when they launched Spinditty an dit gained popularity.

I agree with yo that Steven John Simon's story is motivational. So is Zach Stone's and even young Queeva's story. That's the beauty of country music! ;)

I see that you are getting into the music business. Awesome! Great interviews too.

Perhaps you could do some more motivational ones but you must continue to be good. Higher blessings

Another great interview, Shan! I think you’ve found your niche.

He reminds me a lot of my son in some ways. It’s inspiring to find such a young man of such good character and outlook on life. He has talent! Loved his answers to your questions. He’s the real deal.

Another winner Shannon! Not just the artist, but this article.

I so agree with him, a return to "Family Sundays" would be such a wonderful and rewarding thing.
