Country Music Artist Craig Wayne Boyd: Winner of "The Voice"

Craig Wayne Boyd on The Voice

As a longtime viewer of The Voice, a major fan of Blake Shelton, and a lover of country music, I've always favored Team Blake. During the seventh season of The Voice I favored Craig Wayne Boyd.

It didn't matter which team he was on, I was rooting for him. He had to win! Sunshine's choices always win! The fact that he had charisma and mega-talent was also in his favor.

Craig was like a chameleon. He could change song style and wardrobe and still be amazing. He left no stone unturned. He was the first contestant to be saved twice. He was also the first winner to appear on both Ellen and Jimmy Fallon. Now that is quite an honor. Lucky him.

I cannot imagine what was going on in his head . . . the whirlwind ride went on since his victory on The Voice. Craig must have been walking on air while strumming his guitar to scores of fans who couldn't wait to meet him and hear his golden voice that blends well with his hair color. This fan hopes to meet him one day.

He Almost Gave Up on His Dream

By 2014, Craig had been working at his hopeful country music career for 14 years. He had been in Nashville for 11 years and was hoping for his moment.

He had signed with EMI and had produced two albums, both of which are for sale on iTunes.

Yet, his moment still hadn't arrived. He was at the point where he was considering leaving the music industry and getting a real job. (Say what? One of his popular songs is titled, "I Ain't No Quitter!")

Ain't nobody got time for quitters!

Luckily for all of us Craig Fans, his moment did eventually arrive...The Voice finally emailed him back for an audition. From that moment on the rest is history in the making....

Early Life

Craig was born on New Years Eve in 1978. He hails from Mesquite, Texas, a suburb near Dallas. His father, who earned a living as a truck driver played the guitar and banjo. Craig was surrounded by music and obviously talented kinfolk.

He sang in the church choir and eventually became the director. Music burned hot in his soul. All I can say to that is, amen! I can not imagine life without music.

Craig loves to cook and he is a major fan of Elvis. Could y'all imagine Craig dancing around the kitchen cooking up a meal for his son Jaxon while listening to Elvis songs? Truck yeah!

I could imagine it because his music has a way of moving us. Whether through laughter or tears. Music lovers everywhere, not just fans of country music know the emotional roller coaster ride good music puts us on. Craig, thank you for the ride.

His favorite movie is Tombstone. Bill Paxton, Sam Elliott and Kurt Russell, oh my! I could watch Tombstone with the volume off and still be satisfied.

The softer side of Craig includes his heartfelt caring for cancer patients. Unfortunately, he had witnessed the scars that cancer makes in the innocent lives of its victims. Craig has visited cancer patients in hospitals and performed for them. His fans also raise money for Relay for Life.

Craig expressed his appreciation of my tribute article via Twitter! You're welcome, Craig. Keep on shining...

On His Way to Stardom

Thanks to The Voice, Team Blake and most of all, the multi-talented and multi-instrumentalist from a very young age, Craig is finally on his way to stardom. The ride wasn't an easy one, then again nothing in life comes easy. If by chance it does, in my opinion, it really ain't as worthwhile.

Determination and dedication are why Craig is about to earn the recognition he so deserves.

His first hit, which he sang on The Voice finale was, "My Baby's Got A Smile On Her Face." This song exploded on the charts and went to #1. The only other artist that qualifies for that honor is Garth Brooks, back in 2007 with his hit "More Than A Memory."

Craig has already appeared at The Grand Ole Opry, which is a very special privilege for country music stars. Unfortunately, it was a very emotional evening at The Opry since that particular night they were saluting a fallen hero, Little Jimmy Dickens. Rest in Peace. Craig was a hot mess, but after releasing some stress tears he took the stage by storm and received an "atta boy" from those who are now his peers.

Craig is the sixth country music star to score a Las Vegas residency within a month of winning The Voice. Yeehaw, how awesome is that for making history? I bet Craig is thrilled that he never gave up on his dream and instead went full force ahead to stardom.

His favorite color is red which means, you have a passion and enthusiasm for life and are not afraid to pursue your dreams and goals. Amen to that! Like his song states, "I Ain't No Quitter!"

Fans of Craig's are known as the Yallers, which coincides with his Twitter handle @CWBYall. Well y'all, I'm here to tell you that if you haven't yet heard Craig's music I highly suggest you mosey on along and get to listening and show some support, y'all will be thanking this Yaller.

"I grew up in a Pentecostal home

and in gospel music and

my dad played bluegrass.

Those are the two main ingredients

in my style of country..."

Hi Shyron, I appreciate the visit! :)

Shyron E Shenko from Texas on October 20, 2015:

Hello Sunshine, wonderful hub and I very much enjoyed the videos.

I was raised in a musical family.

My mom could play several instruments, my cousin played professionally.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on September 14, 2015:

Hi Missy, I continue to keep up with Craig Wayne Boyd on Facebook and it is good to hear that he continues to do well. I missed last season, there wasn't an artist who caught my eye :)

Missy Smith from Florida on September 13, 2015:

I also watch The Voice, so I had to comment on Craig. He was also my favorite that year. I remember as the show kept going week after week, more and more of his story of struggle trying to become a respected singer in the country world came out, and I just remember thinking...I cannot believe this guy has not made it yet. I cannot believe that it has actually taken a television show to get him noticed. He is soooo good!

I haven't always been Team Blake, but I was that year. I was actually Team Pharrell this past year. I loved Sawyer Fredericks. I can't wait until this season starts. :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on March 05, 2015:

Great news about the record contracts! I SO agree with you about the country artists selecting Team Blake! I said the same thing ... take a chance with another coach! If they have the talent they should win no matter which coach they have. I do notice that there are many young (under 18) artists this year...the country ones all chose Blake. WHY? Because, I think...they think they have a better chance of winning. They might, I could have this all wrong, but I am a risk taker. A country artist could just as well win with Adam or Pharrell.

Robert from Arvada CO on March 05, 2015:

Update. I found out that the Top 3 from The Voice last season all got record contracts. So all is right in the world! My only question is, why are the country music artists so close minded. None of them would even think about choosing another coach besides Blake. Why would you want to join a whole team competing against 10 other country artists when you can be on a team where you are the ONLY country artist? If I was a country artist on the show I would stay away from Blake.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 25, 2015:

Amen, Flourish! So far, so good with Craig's career. Hopefully he will continue to shine.

FlourishAnyway from USA on February 24, 2015:

I don't usually watch The Voice either, so I enjoyed this. That first photo of him kind of reminds me of Travis Tritt back in the day. The one thing I have always noticed about country music (and I do love it) is that it's always chewed through talented artists at a rate that seems much faster than other creative pursuits. There are so many country artists who were white-hot and they just don't seem to last. Whatever the case, I hope Craig's future shines brightly and that he is happy in all that he does.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 17, 2015:

Always a pleasure to introduce awesome country music artists to new fans! :)

Audrey Howitt from California on February 16, 2015:

What a cutie! I usually don't watch The Voice--so I had no idea!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 16, 2015:

Hi PS, Thanks for stopping by to visit with Sunshine and Craig! :)

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on February 16, 2015:

Thank you for the introduction to this amazing singer. I love all kinds of music and that does of course include just seems to say a lot of what I feel and think.

I will add him to my HeartRadio on my Droid.

Thanks for sharing...

Angels are on the way to you ps

shared and voted up++++

Robert from Arvada CO on February 13, 2015:

Hey Pam. I watched a few seasons of the voice then went and watched american idol. The talent difference is huge. I could not watch the final 10 american idols. Every singer from the voice in the top 12 would win american idol.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 11, 2015:

Hi Pam, I also hope that Craig is a huge far, so good. Thanks for stopping by!

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on February 10, 2015:

I love The Voice, and I voted for Craig Wayne Boyd. I think he is so talented and I hope he really makes it big. I watch American Idol also. I love the way the singers improve on both those shows when they get expert advice. Awesome hub!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 06, 2015:

Jaxson's mama, from what I was told. Teamwork! :)

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 06, 2015:

Then, who's the young woman holding Jaxson throughout the show?

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 06, 2015:

No girlfriend either...but they both work well together as parents to Jaxson, which makes them amazingly awesome parents.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 06, 2015:

I thought I'd missed something. I know he has a son (who's absolutely adorable and dons his dad's long hair), but I was under the impression he's a single dad (from what The Voice portrayed). That makes me love him even more. I wonder how his girlfriend is dealing with his new-found fame.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 06, 2015:

He does have an amazing voice and Craig is also a funny guy. On Twitter and on his Facebook page. When I originally wrote the article, I thought he was married. Well, I was wrong. Never assume. When I spoke with his personal assistant on the phone, she laughed telling me that he isn't married, but Craig told her he did not mind I said that he was. Andie told Craig...Jackie (baby's mama) might mind! LOL! So I nixed the wife. We all had a good laugh.

Victoria Lynn from Arkansas, USA on February 06, 2015:

I'm not much of a country music fan, but I really liked his voice and style on The Voice. I was glad that he won. Great hub! And so cool that he responded to you on Twitter!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 05, 2015:

You just might enjoy Craig's music, Peach! :)

peachy from Home Sweet Home on February 04, 2015:

i never heard of him, maybe i check it out at youtube

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 04, 2015:

I should mention that the "walking billboard" part of the win doesn't last for long...just a few months. Carrie Underwood lost her billboard title sooner than expected because of her mega-talent. Just like Craig. If you got it, flaunt it! :)

Suzie from Carson City on February 04, 2015:

I do hope so!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 04, 2015:

I just watched Matt on YouTube and you both are correct, Matt was awesome!!! He'll do just fine. Actually word on the street is it better not to win the top prize but to come in as a runner up...this way you aren't a walking billboard for the show and you are free to do your own thing much sooner than the winner. Hopefully Matt is doing his thing now!

Suzie from Carson City on February 04, 2015:

I enjoy country along with several other types(eras) of music. I really like Craig & am glad he won. However, Matt IS fabulous and his "Blower's Daughter" was PERFECTION. I think he'll be snatched up by some exec and find himself with a contract anyway. He needs to record. He's fabulous. There have been a few non-winners from the Voice & Amer Idol that went on to have successful music careers.

I'm sure he only lost by a small margin. I wish them both luck!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 04, 2015:

I have to be honest with you GDG, I do not remember Matt's performance. But if Blake and you say it was genius, chances are it was.

Many people are bias against country, I just wish they would give the genre a chance. Put aside all the negative thoughts and just give the music a listen to. Chances are you might enjoy it. I'm a fan of all genres. Country, rock, pop, alternative, reggae...except for classical. I am a fan of the person, not the genre. I think I know which show you might be talking about...KU is a judge :) That's about the best thing going for that show at this time. I haven't watched it in years. Like watching paint dry. Thanks again for sharing your POV.

Robert from Arvada CO on February 03, 2015:

Did you see Matt McAndrew's version of "The Blowers Daughter"? Even blake told him it was genius. I might have an anti country bias here but a lot of people I have talked to preferred Matt over him. I also think that if on some different plane of existence Danielle Bradberry and Craig were in the final at the same time, Danielle would win. She makes singing look effortless. Anyway, I love the voice! Anyone that makes it in the top 10 there would easily win American Idol or that other singing show. (Can't remember the name)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 03, 2015:

Hi Garagedoorguy, I beg to differ mostly because after becoming more acquainted with the Yallers, I have learned that the majority of them are not country music fans. What makes Craig unique is the fact that he could belt out a country, southern rock or even a pop hit and still sound authentic and professional. Sure he has a slight twang since he was born and bred in Texas, but in the end...he earned the win because he won America's vote. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

Robert from Arvada CO on February 03, 2015:

I am not a fan of country music. Never have been, never will be. I thought he did a good job on all of his songs but Matt Mcandrew was way more talented. The problem with The Voice and why blake wins is this: in the end there is always one country singer (because Americans love country music for some strange reason) and 2 other artists. The country artist always will get 100% of the country votes and some of the votes from the other genre fans while the other two artists will not get any votes from country fans and they have to share the votes between them. So the way the voice is set up will always cater to the country music artists.

Mary Craig from New York on February 03, 2015:

Not only is he a greawt singer but now he has a great fan! Your hubs about country western music are outstanding and this one tops the bunch. A new singer with so much talent, not to mention good looks. Go CRAIG.

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 02, 2015:

Sure thing Sha! Craig's PA is super sweet. The Yallers are just helping Craig along on his journey to super-stardom! :)

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 02, 2015:

Linda, that's friggin' awesome! Craig Wayne tweeted you and you spoke to his PA? I am so jealous! Can I touch you? LOL!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 02, 2015:

Thanks, Nell. It was nice of Craig to tweet me a thank you! I spoke with his personal assistant over the phone and she said he really enjoyed the article! Sunshine aims to please! :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 02, 2015:

I agree Tim! Craig is a like a chameleon! He's the whole package.

Nell Rose from England on February 02, 2015:

Woohoo! congrats on the reply on twitter! and yes he is awesome! We don't get the American version over here, so its new to me, but I am listening to his videos above, and love it! well done!

I wasn't a big fan of cntry music. But this dude is off the chart and different. I Gwen did him a favor. It polished him up to give him a broader audience. Cowboy or preppies like him.

Keep your great hubs coming as I love them all.

Kiss your babies for me.

Mesquite Yallers on February 01, 2015:

Craig wants to meet as many of his fans as he can, he is going to in central Florida all week for free shows. Call the radio stations and/or hit them up on social media and ask about tix. Have your friends do it to and your odds are increases to get some for the ones with limited tix. Even if you don't get tix if I were in Florida, I'd show up outside the stations when he is there, I mean a lot of times they have someone no show or extras. Plus knowing Craig, he's been known to sign pics and take pics wherever he has fans wanting to see him. Here is where all y'all can catch up with him...

Radio Show - US 103.5 - Performance Theatre - 11:30am

Radio Show - 92.3 WWKA - Cowboys Orlando - 8:00pm

Radio Show - 97.5 WPCV - The Music Ranch

Radio Show - 106.5 WCTQ - Conley Buick GMC Garage

Radio Show - WQYK - The Round Up in Tampa

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

These concerts are just for radio stations to give him more airplay...he does have the Vegas gig coming up this month. Radio can be unsympathetic to new artists at times. I have noticed on Twitter that there are Yallers almost all over the United States. Craig is a popular guy! Radio has to realize that too.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 01, 2015:

Thanx, Linda. I don't guess I'll be going. I sure hope you do and fill us in on the concert. It's a shame that Craig Wayne Boyd has so many free concerts going on. He deserves better than that.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

Tickets for Craig's show are free and available at Carl Black on East Colonial Dr. Also K92.3 have tickets available.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 01, 2015:

No, I didn't try eBay. I'll try Googling him to see what comes up.

I went into Cowboys website and even Craig Wayne's schedule. It says the Cowboy's gig is free, but you have to have a ticket. I assume that means paying a cover? Cowboys doesn't offer that information. Do you have any idea what it is?

Suzie from Carson City on February 01, 2015:

Hot Damn!! He's just too pretty to be real.......sigh.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

Yay, IslandBites...this Yaller is hopeful that you will enjoy Craig's next single release! :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

Hi Sha, Cowboys is on South Orange Blossom Trail. I've never been, but my daughter has. If I get any pics I'll be sure and share here. Most likely the pictures won't be from me. Did you try ebay for actual CDs?

IslandBites from Puerto Rico on February 01, 2015:

Not a fan of country music, but I love his voice. I was rooting for him too.

I didn't like the song (My Baby's Got a Smile on Her Face) though.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 01, 2015:

Linda, that's past my bedtime, especially through the week. Where is Cowboy's anyway? I hope you take pix.

I went into your Amazon link looking to buy a CD. Apparently, all he's got available right now is MP3s. I hope he pleasures those of us who were of the vinyl era who have been forced to succumb to CDs. Baby Boomers unite!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

Hey, AlabamaYaller! Thanks for stopping by! #TeamCWB

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 01, 2015:

I agree Sha, Gwen did help a lil but I'm so glad he won via Team Blake! :) The FREE show at Cowboys starts at 9:30, I doubt I'll be able to be there, but I'm going to try! on February 01, 2015:

DJ Anderson on February 01, 2015:

Nice Video. I Love Blue Eyes.

Linda he's going to be in your neck of the woods, this Wednesday.

Have you ever thought about working as an usher at the coliseum?

Free shows!!!!

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 01, 2015:

Linda, I was all for Craig Wayne Boyd (and he'll correct you if you don't use his full name - or at least Craig Wayne) all through season seven. I have an affinity for Blake, too. He's real. He maintains relationships with his mentees, and holds nothing back.

I was a little upset when Gwen Stefani "cleaned him up", but I think she did his career well. She introduced him to fans who are not normally hip to country and southern rock.

What's really cool is, My Baby's Got a Smile on Her Face is a song Blake wrote many years ago and held in his back pocket. Kismet brought him and Craig Wayne together and Blake turned the song over to him as his (Craig Wayne's) original in the final round. How cool is that?

Craig Wayne Boyd is amazing. He's got music in his soul. And it's a total plus that he's pretty to look at! Too bad I'm old enough to be his mother!

I had no idea he was coming to Orlando. I'd love to see him in concert. Are you going?
