The word God has been used in numerous song titles since music came into being. While the word is often mentioned in Christian music song titles, the word has also been consistently used in song titles from different music genres, in both mainstream and non-mainstream. However, the word God has been used to express different faiths, beliefs and ideologies.

In various music genres songwriters have used the word God in a metaphoric manner. Understanding of God differs from person to person. While a number of songs talk about getting to know God with the heart, an equal number preach a message about finding God with the mind’s eye. Perspective and ideologies in regard with God are formed in accordance with personal experiences.

The Word God in Song Titles

While intellect does help understand theological concepts in a precise manner, it does not help establish a relationship with God. It’s the simplicity and understanding found in things we see and come across around us is what is beautifully narrated in songs. There are songs that praise God and there are songs that question God’s identity. The school of thought in regard with God’s presence and omnipresence differs. It’s a songwriter’s factual perception through belief or experience that manifests itself in a song that may reflect the meaning of God in the song title. Sometimes the word God may be used in a song title to convey a hidden meaning through the lyrics.

In songs the word God has also been used figuratively to render authority to a person or thing. While the true meaning of the word God in a song can be best explained by the songwriter of the song, over the years interpretations of listeners in context with the word have been diverse and complex, each trying to prove their point.
